Light's final mistake [SPOILER]

When all was lost, Light told Ryuk to write everyone's name down and kill them, and that he would show them something interesting. Instead, Ryuk wrote Light's name on Death Note, killing Light.

That was a big miscalculation on Light's part. If Ryuk had written down everyone's name, Ryuk would have in effect extended Light's life (similiar to what Rem did) and would be killed. There was no way that Ryuk would do that - especially Ryuk was not as "kind" as Rem.

In effect, Light's final mistake sealed his fate.

wow, good point. I never thought of that one.
I always just thought that it goes with Ryuk's unreliable/untrustworthy nature.

But yes, if Ryuk had done what he was asked to by Light then he would have gotten himself killed in order to save light.
Ryuk's not the type to do that.

Light was too overconfident and should have listened between the lines abit more.
Ryuk constantly told him: "I am neither on your, or L's side" and he said other subtle hints throughout the movie as well.
Also, when Light thought he had killed "L", Ryuk simply said to him:
"so you killed L huh?"
Ryuk obviously knew that L was still alive. But he played along with what light had thought.

Not to mention, but the end of the movie, Light turned into an arrogant, power hungry douche.
he thought he was an expert schemer and was pretty ruthless.

In the end, Ryuk put him in his place.
