Ken'ichi Matsuyama as L....is it just me

who hated is portrayal as L...ok hate is strong word so i cant say i hated it but for me it just wasn't very good.
dont get me wrong he got the brilliance of L down pretty well, but where was the comical side of L, the part that would make you laugh when your watching/reading he could of done a lot better in my opinion

I thought the worst thing about Death Note being a live action film would be the transition of the anime character 'L' into a live person. I couldn't imagine that it would be possible. With that in mind, I thought Kenichi Matsuyama gave an outstanding performance. I thoguht he was brilliant. He captured the look, feel, and mannerisms, so what more could you ask for?

reply

well like i said i do think he did a good job of capturing is brilliance and "weirdness" but for me he just didn't make the cut...maybe i just set my expectations far to high.

I disagree.
He had plenty of comical moments; stirring his tea with a lollipop, wearing that goofy mask when they captured Kiyomi, eating the offerings to the recently deceased Mogi, etc.
I liked that he and the director didn't overdo it.

In my opinion Matsuyama was great as L, considering how hard it is to make the character real and not overdo it.

I liked him. I think he did a great job, but it's practicly impossible to find a perfect L. He's just too special, so I don't think any actor can do as good or better than the anime. But I still hope.

I agree with you; I'm watching it now and theres something off with him I mean he does the best he could but I don;t think any human could play L

Matsuyama did a great job considering L is such a weird, improbable character. I thought the scene at the university when he wears the mask was absolutely hilarious. What maybe didn't work too well was when he opened his eyes wide, that looked unnatural and exaggerated. Other than that it was pretty good. Besides, you could say something similar about Light, that the actor wasn't good looking and smart enough.

Having never seen the anime, and only just seen both movies on FilmFour recently, I must say that L was one of the most mesmerizing portrayals of genius I have ever seen.

The quirks related to his constant eating and the way that his movement seemed to mimic the movement styles of the Gods led my mind into thinking many different possibilities.

I honestly feel that the whole character of L was encompassed in an understated performance demonstrating eccentricity bordering on insanity. The very traits that are often seen to accompany the trait we call 'Genius'.

I'm with everyone who disagrees with the OP. I don't think anyone could have put up a dead-on performance like Ken'ichi Matsuyama.

Before watching the movie I read the comics and was kind of skeptical about L being on screen in a live action movie, but his portrayal is just awesome!

Nah, he delivered a great performance.

Really? I thought he was an absolutely perfect L. And how could you not notice the comical side of L, like the way he ate all through the movie and giving that goofy thumbs-up with that giant green thing in his mouth? lol
