How did L know when to fake his death?

In the movie L wrote his name down first so he wouldnt' die, but how did he know when to pretend to die? He said Watari wasn't part of his plan so how was he originally planning to know when to drop to the ground and play dead? It would be very strange if he just "died" and Light was like "wtf I didn't kill him, did you Rem?" and Rem comes out and shakes her head.

He didn't know, he was made a quick-thinking guess when Watari bit the dust. Watari's DEATH wasn't part of his plan, but he did plan to have Watari bring in Misa, in order to trick Light into giving himself away by providing an apparently ideal opportunity to finally kill him.

Did L think Light would blatantly pick up a note and kill him? My question was how was L meant to know when to pretend to fall down and play dead? It would be wierd if he fell down and Light didn't do anything.

I just answered; when Rem killed Watari he realised what was going on and pretended to die himself.

But Watari dying wasn't part of his plan. According to his plan, how did L think he would know when he would need to play dead?

He may not have planned to drop dead at all if he had Watari there to help him "make the arrest." Eithwr that or yes, he really did think that Light would openly use the piece of Death Note he had to try to kill him then and there. After all, Light did gloat and show he was Kira after he thought Rem had killed L; he thought nobody was watching.

I guess.

L wrote his own name in the book so Light couldn't kill him whenever he wanted to, not so he wouldn't die. L still dies, 20 days later as he put in the book. He knew Watari went down because of the sensors they showed that track their health.

As far as faking the heart attack, he didn't.

Remu's note actually caused him to have one, it just didn't kill him.

I think that can be ruled out as there's nothing in the film that indicates that. L fakes it after seeing Watari flatline...

As far as I could tell, L's plan was to get Watari to bring Misa to him and Light with the Death Note. The Plan was that Misa would actually try to kill L using the book. If you remember, L told light to use the surveillance cameras around the building and to watch Misa and when she was about to write his name in the book Light was to stop her.

I think that L's Plan was that Misa would write his name in the note but Light quite obviously would NOT stop her therefore revealing himself as Jira and Misa as Kira II. That was the plan.

However, when Watari was killed I think L took a decision to 'play dead' because he realosed that REM had become involved.

Actually, in terms of the real plan that L made from the beginning, he would not have needed to pretend to have a heart attack at all because Light's father had actually not gone to America and was watching the whole thing. He would have seen Light and Misa use the note to try to kill L but it would not have worked because he had already written his own name and invoked the 23 day rule. But L needed to fake the heart attack in case Misa used the note and Light just claimed he could not stop her. By faking a jeart attack L made Light reveal himself fully as Kira.

There is a bit of a problem here though. L says that Rem killing Watari and him wasn't part of the plan. This brings up the question: 'Why did L write his name in the Death Note'. Assuming that Misa forgot his name he was in no real danger until she saw him but by that time they would have switched the note with a fake one. The only way he would have to write his name in the note is if Misa did in fact remember his name. But that would be a very risky move. If Misa were completely sure of his name when writing it and he didn't die Light would definitely suspect something was wrong. Anyway this is a kinda big plot hole that people seem to overlook.

So Misa writes the name and he doesn't die because it's a fake notebook. What next? L assumes Light still has some kind of access to a Death Note, so she'd just say "His name is Bob Smith" or whatever, and Light would take care of it. Worse, he'd run the risk of Light writing something like "Bob Smith. Tells the investigation team that Light Yagami is 100% not Kira. One week later, he chokes on a donut."

I was wondering the same thing so i looked at it again. Both L and Watari had heart monitoring devices. also L was lookinig at Misa and Watari in the elevator and saw when Watari fell and you also see his monitor flat line. Since L knew Misa's deathnote was fake and cannot kill Watari and Light is with him at the time, he concluded that Rem is trying to save Misa, since L is the one really after Kira L assumes Rem would kill him as well...and fakes a heart attack. Also as L is "dying" you see him clutch his heart and it looks like he disconnects the heart monitoring device, you can also see a wire in his hand.

I guess L acted on the spot after seeing Watari kick the bucket....and Light saying "checkmate" might have helped confirm his theory on him... from then on everything came naturally... he pretended to die and Light thought he'd won...

LOL. On an old Doctor Who episode, I remember when the Doctor and his companion were sitting at a table with the bad guy though they did not know it at the time. When the Doctor passed out after drinking poisoned wine, the bad guy gave away his true intentions with a single line at which time the companion then pretended to pass out.

The one thing L was doing differently was that he always planned to fake his death and telling Light about the heart monitor was a way to insure that Light would believe he was dead. (However, this also seemed to prove Light was a moron for not making sure L was dead.)
