Film concepts ripped off by this movie that i found

The Butterfly effect : main plot elements
The Matrix : Costume design/ Neo-like Ian Stone
Near Dark : Monster is being chased by his own kind in the pursuit to do what is right, even though he denies his own true nature.

the "monsters" looked like the mothman from The Mothman Prophecies/ also kindof like the twins from The Matrix:Revolutions

these are obvious ripoffs, can you add any others?

Seriously?

You'd be better off referencing Groundhog Day for the plot, as the differences between The Butterfly Effect and Ian Stone are many. The latex outfits featured? How about Underworld, where you can also mention the monster angle? You can claim that a million little details came from a million other films, but it doen't make it the same movie.

Nobody mentionned the 'Terminator 2' blade hands yet?
And they look like the tails from H.R. Giger's Aliens.

I'm not saying all the good movies have been written, but all of the good movies have been written. And most of the bad movies have been written too.

wow the original poster is a moron

reply

Don't forget about the blade hand attacking them through the elevator ceiling, as seen in Terminator 2, and this movie.

dark city?

<I'll buy that for a dollar!>

reply

Yap. This was the one on my mind all the time.

Bifanas...

reply

yep. i loved dark city and i loved the fact that they used them as life changers. it may be concept stealing, btu concept cant be copyrighted anyway, else no movie would ever come out since anything made nowadays already were done.

wow... a bad movie ripping off other bad movies... interesting.

Yeah, and it totally ripped off Batman Begins, 300, and The Lord of The Rings because it was shot in the aspect ratio of 2.33:1.

Seriously, this thread is overreaching.

its also definately more like an episode of ANGEL Season 5, Episode 17: Underneath - Angel and his crew rescue a guy from a hell dimension. in this dimension the guy repeats his day everyday the same and it ends the same with his heart getting ripped out of him while he's alive.

"The Forgotten"

'Salvage'!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492754/

Haven't seen 'Salvage' myself but 'The deaths of Ian Stone' sounds almost like a copy!

'Salvage':
"Claire Parker is going to die. At the hands of a sadistic and depraved killer, she will endure a terrifying, unimaginable brutal death--and it will all happen again. After being beaten, dragged, sliced, and stabbed, Claire awakens at work--where it all began--untouched and unharmed. But the hellish ordeal is far from over. The madman is back and he's ready for more blood..."

reply

Jacob's Ladder

They use the same 'shaking head' effect as that movie.

reply

Salvage was a better movie. I rated that an "8" while I rated this movie a generous "6", because it started out great - before getting silly.

If you haven't already, see Salvage...

reply

"Salvage" is a good call, but I'll add "Dark Corners" starring Thora Birch. When I saw it, it reminded me of "Salvage".

However, unlike the thread originator, I never think that these are copycatting each other. Similar ideas crop up a lot; it's how they're played out that is the important part. For example, I sort of liked this film, but I also can enjoy "Salvage" and "Dark Corners".

For a repeat-story, there's also "Between" with Poppy Montgomery. I'm sure that, if we thought about it, we could list many more of these, whether science fiction and fantasy, both drama and comedy. I enjoy them as rather "trippy" movies that test my guessing ability as to what the twist/explanation will be.

"They" ?

It was pretty derivative of ...

Groundhog Day (guy keeps waking up again and again, even after dying)
The Butterfly Effect (the love interest has a different role in his life every different time)
and
Meet Joe Black (Protagonist falls in love with human)

I liked it though. If you gotta derive, derive from the good ones!

"12:01" which already seems like a rip off of groundhog day

""12:01" which already seems like a rip off of groundhog day"

Well, you could say Groundhog's Day is a rip-off of 12:01...What?! I know, crazy...the 1993 film 12:01 is a full length remake of the 1990 short film, which in turn was an adaptation of the early 70's short story 12:01 PM by Richard A. Lupoff.

reply

ahhhh well it might be possible for 12:01 to be a rip off of Groundhog day but its pretty damn unlikely as they both came out the same year

not to be picky, but "the matrix" itself borrows heavily from "dark city." then again, it was the same production design team-- they even reused sets from "dark city!"

but i know what you mean-- i found similiarities between "ian stone" and the following films:

"dark city" -- production design, plot points (characters being moved around everyday by aliens for nefarious reasons), etc.

"jacob's ladder" -- creepy subway/train scenes, that effect with heads shaking really fast, stabbings with an organic blade, etc.

one of the straight to video "hellraiser films." i can't remember which one. it was very similiar in plot.

then again, all of these films borrow heavily from the original twilight zone series, especially the first two seasons.

reply

The first life of Ian Stone reminded me of the beginning of The Dead Zone, the second was rather Jacob's Ladder... lots of Dark City, and also The Nines. I don't think that's a very widely-seen movie, but it has a similar theme by the time you reach the end.
Not to say that I didn't enjoy Ian Stone, just that it kept, almost forcibly, reminding me of other films.

Just from the plot description, the closest comparison seems to be an episode of Angel. The episode is called "Underneath". It has a character trapped in a hell dimension where he goes through his day and then at the end of it he's tortured and has his heart removed, only for it to happen again the very next day.

That said, the reason this movie interests me is precisely because of this comparison! :D
