'You know I would do anything'

Sorry for being so thick-skulled, but Fanny was talking about consummating their romance, right?

reply

Yes.

I think she's the saddest girl ever to hold a martini.

reply

Yep!That's what I took it to mean.

I just saw this movie today, I believe he pushed her away due to his illness, but sometimes tell me if he wasn't gravely ill, he might have been more tempted. But they sure would have to be sneaky considering the times, Young women were constantly chaperoned.

If he wasn't gravely ill, she would not have been allowed to be alone with him in a bedroom. However, young women did get pregnant out of wedlock even in those days. Even upper class women. It had enormous social consequences for both the mother and child, however. And so, yes, Keats did not want to have her possibly suffer that fate.

“It’s not what a movie is about, it’s how it is about it.” RIP Roger Ebert

That's what I was thinking too. His answer to her was saying 'I have a conscience". He doesn't want to risk getting her pregnant and ruining her life. He knows he's probably going to die, and even if he survives, he can't marry her bc he has no money.
