Error

I was watching the Stealth episode when about 6 minutes into the show a comparison is made of bullet sizes. It was stated that the .308 is a standard AK-47 round. The .308 is actually a standard NATO round used in weapons such as the US M60 machine gun. The AK-47 uses 7.62X39mm rounds and these are not NATO.

I believe this was a hot issue on the Discovery boards. The best explanation is that he probably owns a modified AK and simply had a slip of the tongue.

a .308 is the same diamater as 7.62, just a different unit, i.e. .308 cal (inch) and 7.62mm (metric). i dont know why but the case length is hardly ever used when talking about guns and stuff, mainly the diamater.

reply

m with203 is right, it's just standard to metric. like saying 5.56mm is .223 cal.

reply

But the .308 NATO round has a case length of 51mm as to the 39mm on the AK-47 round. If he were refering to the diamater, he should´nt say .308 NATO round. The standard AK-47 round is called 7.62 M43.

reply

Watching that episode right now. It's obvious the guy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. No one, NO ONE refers to the 7.62x39 Ak-47 round as being ".308" even if just referencing bullet diameter. It's always 7.62x39. Always. I am completely put off by the show now because of this dope.

This guy spent 10 years in the navy seals, he knows a hell of a lot more than any one you, he can shoot better than any of you, and he has alot more money and access to these weapons than any of you, so stop acting like you know more about weapons he has been around for his whole life.

Yeah, 'cause being in the military makes you smart...

"You're too smart for me, professor. All I know is that no one wants to die..."

And just because you're not a professional car driver or navy seal doesn't mean you don't know cars or guns.

If you think that just because he served so long in the military, that makes him an expert on the area of weapon technologies and specifications then you're a fool. I've had talks with over a dozen different people in the military and I have been able to find two who can even tell me the difference between a .45 and a 9mm round. These people aren't trained to know how their weapons work or why they were given to them. Our country's army, despite your misconceptions, is a bunch of trained monkeys. They're not trained to do much else but go THAT way and kill. Only when you get into the really in-depth training like Special Forces work do you begin to focus on what works tactically or why certain weapons are better in certain situations.

Oh, he was a Navy Seal, you say? Yeah, they're dumb too. My uncle is an Army Ranger and has stated that he's never met a bigger bunch of idiots than the Navy Seals. My best friend's dad used to be a SEAL, and he wasn't much to look at either. They're not smart, they're just trained to jump out of airplanes and off of boats. Get it into your head that just because somebody has a television show doesn't make him a genius.

reply

But i can see he really shoots well

He isn't just a normal grunt. The guy was a SEAL. Yes, SEALs are smart, most hold several degrees. They are trained on most of the weapons of the world. They are capable of using and field stripping guns that the enemy would use. They are trained on a high end array of weapons. Not to mention this guy has been doing the show for 3 seasons and hangs out with weapon manufacters on a daily basis.

If you think some dumbass 12 year old on an IMDB forum can school him, youre a ****in moron.

Talking about error, here is another one.

In the Maximum Impact episode when they're introducing the thermobaric bomb, the host says "A F15 fighter had to drop the bomb...", and the actual fighter taking off is a F16. A former navy seal can't distinguish a 1-engine fighter from a 2-engine one? I can't believe that. So it is more likely to be a minor editing error. If you know even a bit about weapons you won't be misguided by these little bugs. So just take it easy, it's a great show overall.

reply

It's the editor's fault. Mack simply reads a script when he does voiceovers; it's likely that he prerecorded it and the guy responsible for the file footage put the wrong clip in afterwards. Mack probably had nothing to do with the error.

thank you citizens for an intelligent thought out post.
