Where was it set?

Which city was the film set in? Or was it just meant to be an anonymous smallish city?

All the outdoor shots are from Vaslui (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaslui), a smallish, poverty-stricken city in eastern Romania. The static picture in the TV studio, behind the talk show guests, is a real shot from the centre of Vaslui. The director, Porumboiu, was born in Vaslui. You draw your own conclusions ;-)

Thank you for that. IMDb says the filming location is Bucharest; but in the movie several characters mention going to Bucharest or just reference Bucharest as being somewhat far away (like Virgil's mistress, who says she's going to spend the holidays in Bucharest against his wishes). Plus, in the commentary, Porumbui mentions he knows every inch of the town (I don't think he names it).

probably it was set in vaslui, but by not mentioning this in the movie, it was ment to be a small city, somewhere in romania.
