Do I need to see Happiness?

Do I need to see Happiness in order to understand this film? Would you recommend it or does it not matter at all

reply

IMO, Happiness is the better film-it's just so amazing and disturbing!! LOL Be carefull who you watch it with though!!

I have not failed, I've found 10,000 ways that won't work.

I don't think you do. I've seen Happiness, but I watched this without even knowing it was related and I understood it fine.

But why not watch Happiness anyway? It's good.

reply

I would say yes. This feels like a direct sequel and many situations are based on what happened in Happiness. Opening shot even.

Really liked this movie though even if it was less subtle.

Sadly, Happiness is in need of an upgrade on video. The DVD version we have is not anamorphic and looks like garbage on any HDTV made today. It may have been a passable DVD when released in the late 90's, but there's no reason it hasn't been upgraded. I just don't understand why Criterion couldn't have released it with Life During Wartime and sold them on Blu-Ray.

So if you haven't seen it, I think you are missing out on the better movie, but I understand why you haven't seen it as it's really not available on a video format suited for the audio visual set up most people have these days.

Never watch movies again.

You absolutely do need to see Happiness in order to understand this film, but also just to see it. It's a masterpiece.
