It's set before the 60s actually. Ms. Tillie is offering an illegal abortion, the only option.

The scene of Ruth going to the place to have the abortion is very important. Actually the play was produced in 1959 before the 1960s and many women had abortions illegally.
shareJust because abortions were illegal prior to 1973, it didn't mean they weren't available. One of the reasons for legal abortions was to make them safe, affordable and available to women. Prior to that, rich women could afford to get safe procedures from doctors who would do it on the sly. Poor women either had to resort to home remedies (i.e. pennyroyal tea or other herbal methods), wire hangers or back alley abortionists who generally offered unsanitary, dangerous methods.
Abortion methods, safe or otherwise, have been available for thousands of years.
I never said abortions were available. I asked HOW.I'm wondering HOW?

For what it's worth, here's wikipedia's two cents...
"Historically, a number of herbs reputed to possess abortifacient properties have been used in folk medicine: tansy, pennyroyal, black cohosh, and the now-extinct silphium. The use of herbs in such a manner can cause serious — even lethal — side effects, such as multiple organ failure, and is not recommended by physicians.
Abortion is sometimes attempted by causing trauma to the abdomen. The degree of force, if severe, can cause serious internal injuries without necessarily succeeding in inducing miscarriage. Both accidental and deliberate abortions of this kind can be subject to criminal liability in many countries. In Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, there is an ancient tradition of attempting abortion through forceful abdominal massage.
Reported methods of unsafe, self-induced abortion include misuse of misoprostol, and insertion of non-surgical implements such as knitting needles and clothes hangers into the uterus. These methods are rarely seen in developed countries where surgical abortion is legal and available."
