Tragedy

This is a travesty to all of human-kind.
Sean Combs, you are just being disrespectful now.
Wake up from your dream and realize that you are a decent producer and a sub-par rapper, not an actor.
You disgust me.

reply

I might say the same about you. The fact that Mr. Combs wants to bring this important and beautiful play to a new generation of people should be commended, not dismissed. Also, having seen these actors on Broadway, I will be the first to admit that Mr. Combs was the least impressive of the stars, but the Work of Audra McDonald and Phylicia Rashad was Magnificent and the fact that now everyone will have the chance to see their work is simply wonderful. Be very careful about the disrespectful things you say about the work of others

reply

I do agree with you.
The other actors and actresses in this piece are wonderful, and this play is an important piece of American history. What I find disrespectful is that Sean Combs is placing himself among these talented and influential actors.
Do you not find that the least bit conceded?
He is putting his untalented self on the same level as these icons.
That is all that I find disrespectful.

reply

I don't think it's conceited at all. I admire his effort. Or would you prefer he were making the typical rapper film stuff, killing people and having indiscriminate sex? This is such a better, more positive vehicle.

reply

Well I too saw the performance on Broadway and have seen Monsters Ball and just think that P. Sissy can't act his way out of a cardboard box.

It's disrespectful to the trade of acting for him to keep punishing audiences with his egotistical masturbation. He should stay away from microphones and cameras and keep it in the studio where he, just barely, belongs.

reply

I'm not really sure if they needed to do a remake, but how bad can this one be? Admittedly, they could have picked someone a little better than Combs. But as long as they don't mess with the script, I'm gonna watch it.

reply

Anyone who could call this a "travesty" obviously did not see the Broadway production. This remarkable cast, which is now being reunited for the film was magnificient! And Puffy was no exception. This is a powerful and talented cast, probably more so than anyother I have seen on the Broadway stage in the 15 years I have been an avid theater goer. The fact that these talented women are acting next to Puffy says they think he is worthy of this role, and I would trust their judgement in talent over anyone on the IMDB message board 7 days out of the week. People truly should wait and see the movie before jumping to conclusions or calling this a travesty. Otherwise when it's said and done they will have to eat crow, because no one will be able to deny the strength in Puffy's performence.

Well said dahling! :):) Jenn

eat crow?

he is way too pompous to be taken seriously. admit it, diddy is an ego maniac.

what i can't understand is how can u be upset with diddy. i saw the broadway production in 2004. i was very happy with his performance. he did a great job. First of all not that many black male rappers are doing positive things so we should be thankful he respects mrs. Hansberry's vision. im very elated diddy is a part of the movie. talk about someone else like micheal richards using the n word.

I'd of rather have seen Mos Def play the role of Walter Lee. At least Mos has proven himself with his acting abilities, especially in "Something the Lord Made". I couldn't pay to see Diddy in this on Broadway but I'll tune into the movie on Feburary 25th.

reply

I agree that P Diddy in the film is a tragedy but I disagree about the idea that Lathan, McDonald, or Rashad, had a "say" about Diddy being cast. The problem with this movie points to a bigger issue in black Hollywood and that's the LACK of young talented black actors getting the opportunities. I can't believe everyone else is glossing over this very important point. The reason Sean Combs was cast is because they could find anyone YOUNG ENOUGH with ENOUGH STAR POWER to be Walter Lee Younger. Hollywood isn't developing young black talent like they develop the young white actors. I felt Combs was too old for the role and simply not talented enough. Since Hollywood is about making money they cast Combs in the movie hoping it will be a ratings winner.

reply

Hollywood doesn't develop talent anymore like they did in the 1950's. Actors go to school, take classes, study acting and follow mentors to develop their craft. Yes, he should be commended for helping to bring this to film, but it's not like there's NO black actor in the world that could give this part justice and credibility.

As for someone young enough, Combs was almost 40 when this was filmed; Poitier was 34. Dule Hill would have been an excellent choice.

reply

Sorry, but I agree with JoeColosi.

reply

I'm sorry, but no one can live up to Sydney Portier to me. I mean, this film was perfection when it was made staring him and I don't know people feel the need to remake perfection. It's ridiculous and annoying and I'm starting to get tired of all the remakes. Not that I don't like P.Diddy and think he's a bad actor, it's not that at all. But I LOVED Sydney. I am just tired of remakes.

So, he couldn't "bring this important and beautiful play" by just maintaining the role of producer and hiring a real actor?
