Sanaa Lathan

She did really well in her role, and looked soooo good in the process :)

i disagree. i didn't think she did well at all. plus, she was a bit old to play a 19 or 20 y/o. When I first saw the preview, i thought she was supposed to be Walter Lee's wife.

That's the one thing my husband was complaining about all night . . . that Sanaa was too old to play a college girl. I believe she is in her late 30's? None the less, I felt she did a wonderful job although I'm sure there are some amazing age-appropriate actresses that could have done the role justice as well =).

I thought she did okay. But you know I was watching that character and instantly thought they should have gotten that girl that played the lead in Denzel's movie - The Great Debaters (sorry can't recall her name - the fair complexioned girl). She would've been perfect for that role.

^ agreed...she, Jurnee Smollett, would have been a great choice. Sanaa acted well but didn't look the part.

I think Journee Smollett (sp?) would have been a horrible chioce. I thought she sucked in Great Debators. I hated the way she "talked" when she debated. She sounded like a retarded preacher.

Give some fresh young talent a chance for goodness sake! Does it have to be an actor I already know? I would have loved to see that role played by a brilliant fresh face on the scene!

Actually she was twenty-seven when this movie was made; possibly a few years older than the character she was playing but not by all that much.

My problem with Lathan is that too much of her performance is a direct imitation of Diana Sands from the original. It's as if she studied it very carefully and then reproduced it right down to her tone of voice in certain scenes.

I disagree 100%. Their tone, inflections, emoting, etc was so completely different, IMO. I usually love Sanaa but I felt like she was just saying these lines. I do not feel like she really felt what she was saying. Like the whole, "There is no God" scene. The words just rolled off of her tongue. She did it so differently from Diana, who completely OWNED the role.

She overdramatized after being slapped.

@pt-lopez.I didn't like her performance either.

I can see what people are "saying" about Sanaa being a bit old for the role of Beneatha Younger because she's supposed to be early 20s. However, this is Hollywood they need black stars in the movie to attract a younger audience. Although, I must admit Sanaa has the talent to pull off the performance and I thought she held her own last night.

Sanaa's performance impressed me she was amazing as Beneatha Younger. Beneatha is a young feminist a carefree spirit, a young black woman that wanted MORE out of her life she was going to become a doctor. The movie deals with feminist themes and I thought Sanaa's performance was just incredible! I was VERY impressed.

I agree with this. I did notice that she was too old for the part, but not enough to complain about it and I thought she was wonderful.

I think that Sanaa looks younger than she actually is. I thought she did a great job in the role. I bought that she was in her early twenties. It had a lot to do with her costuming and everything as well. I am glad she was nominated for a Tony. I thought she did really well. My opinion.

That is very true. Sanaa did an excellent job, and the age wasn't a factor. Given how old many young women look nowadays, Sanaa was definitely believable for a woman in her 20's, especially with the wardrobe and the hairstyle.

i thought she did very well. i never cared for her until i saw her in this role.

I think Sannaa made the perfect Beneatha. But like others here I did think she was too old to play someone in her early twenties. But that's nothing new. Lots of films and Tv do this. No big deal.
