Beaten by Ratatouille?
Possibly one of the biggest jokes in all the years of the academy awards.

shareI'm agree with the OP. 'Persepolis' was the best animated film that year (2008). Certainly 'Ratatouille's' CGI animation is top-notch and the story is quite entertaining. Nonetheless 'Persepolis' is much more than that. It's no mere entertainment (although it is quite an entertaining movie), it's also a very important document about one of the main episodes of XX century history, told from the POV of a girl/young woman who lived through those difficult times for her country, her family and herself.
Finally, 'Persepolis' is a more mature, thought-provoking AND relevant film than 'Ratatouille'.
But then we are talking about the Oscars where the terms "innovation, boldness, thought-provoking", and so on, apparently are considered "bad words" by the Academy members.
Ego's closing monologue in Ratatouille. That's all I have to say.
"I'm a star, I'm a star, I'm a star. I'm a big bright shining star"

I came to know recently that Ratatouille, one of my favourite animation flicks had been adjudged better than Persepolis. I'd say Persepolis deserved an Oscar for the best movie leave alone animation.
Where is my Mjöllnir ! Arrrghh!
Agree with OP and some others Percepollis is one of the all time great because of the ambition it brought to the movie. daring to choose B&W animation for such a topic and being very successful at that.
shareRatatoullie was good. I did like the animation in this, more than Rattaoullie. To lose to Ratatoullie isn't a bad thing.
Im the Alpha and the Omoxus. The Omoxus and the Omega
i have no problem with that, Ratatouille was probably just the safer option for the academy
so many movies, so little time
