Symbolism of the dogs?

The opening shot of the film is just a gorgeous looking German Shepherd. Throughout the film there are scenes with dogs displayed prominently. They are all very good looking dogs who are obviously well cared for.

I was wondering if anyone was able to make a connection between the dogs and the film. I'm at a loss.

Better yet, why open with the German Shepherd (that I assume is a Japanese soldier dog)?
