1. Based on where I live, I'm from Indonesia. But there are Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, and Indonesian blood in my family. That's why I'm so related to Lust, Caution; both the movie and the novel. I've mentioned some things about my cultural background in this board. If you want to know more, just search my message in board with title:
- Poor Tang Wei... actress BANNED FROM CHINA??!!
- I don't understand why Wong have to have sex with her classmate.
- Quail eggs in Asian culture (SPOILER)

2. Of course I like this film. No no no..., I LOVE this film (& novel) :)

reply

Sweden. Excellent film.

Come out, Neville!!!

She had to have sex with the classmate so that she wouldn't be an inexperienced virgin when she got into bed with Yee. He thought she was a married woman. They chose that particular classmate because *he* was the only one in the group of young collaborators who had any sexual experience, himself.

reply

yep, that's right. but what i really don't get is why does she has to have sex with lee?! why don't "just kill him"?!

btw i'm chinese but i was born and raised in germay and i was very impressed by the movie =)

reply

You seem to have missed the fact that she fell in love with mr. Yi.

I live in Columbus, OH and saw this on a DVD rented from Netflix...I didnt know what to expect - and was very surpised at how good this movie is...it is a little too long, but the plot was involved and really held my interest...I think that just one sex scene would have been enough - it sure looked realisitic! after all, we get the message after the first one!! but perhaps the director had his own reasons for having more than one!! The period was captured outstandingly - I felt as if I were watching a movie actually filmed at that time!!! Please don't stay away from this film based on its NC-17 rating...it will surprise you at how good it is!!!!!!!

I'm from California--I was fascinated by the movie, but disappointed with the ending. Not just because it was sad, but because it seemed trite. How much more interesting if she had let the resistance kill the guy--and then what happens with her and the young boyfriend?

reply

I'm from Australia.

Yes, I loved the movie. One of my favourites in the foreign language category.

The reason the movie didn't have a happily ever after ending is because it wasn't made in Hollywood. Unlike most Hollywood movies it had a realistic ending.
I'm from Australia and I loved it.

Australia - an exceptional film

I live in Chicago,

I will have to admit that I watched the movie for the wrong reason. . .Netflix recommended it to me based on naughtiness (I'd watched another film with some rough sex scenes, Ano Bisiesto (Leap Year)).

But it really was much more than that. I didn't know it was Ang Lee when I watched it, but it figured afterwards.

An excellent period espionage thriller. I think the "zen" poster on one of the other threads has an excellent appraisal of Wong's character. I really appreciated this movie, and liked the fact that it was slow and deliberate. I was fully engrossed pretty much the whole time -- at almost three hours, it did not feel like it dragged at all.

I'm trying to figure out who the other female student character is -- she looked familiar.

Anyway, good film.

From California, USA, I liked this film very much. I don'tknow Chinese and therefore depended on the English subtitles. Ang Lee is always great with body language and facial expressions, no matter what the language.

reply

The UK - Yup, loved it, as I do pretty much everything Ang Lee does. Along with "No Country For Old Men" I'd rank it as one of the two finest films I've seen this year.

From Scotland. Beautiful film. Loved it.

From Malaysia...
Though this film was being heavily edited here...
I still can feel its awesomeness!

1) I'm from the United States, but I'm Filipino. The Philippines was under Japanese occupation too during World War II so this movie was kind of personal to me.

2) I enjoyed the movie although it disappointed me that she tipped off the collaborator.

BTW, I knew that was a Taiwan flag shown during certain parts of the movie. Didn't even have to google it ;)
