Question about Kelly's braids

In the kitchen, Queen Latifah's character is talking to her daughter Kelly about keeping her braids and playing basketball, she asks if girls tried to touch her. Is she trying to tell her not to look like a lesbian?

I mean Kelly looked like your "average" (whatever that is) straight African-American female.

Any thoughts on this? I don't really know much about AA lesbian culture. Please enlighten me. Thanks!

That confused me as well. It did seem to me she was saying girls might go after her if she has cornrows and is on the Basketball team.

I thought that line was funny because Queen Latifah played a butch lesbian with cornrows 15 years ago in Set It Off. At the time, she got a lot of flack for the role. In a way, I thought she was referring to that.

I didn't get the connection between cornrow braids, basketball and lesbianism either. Maybe it's a Brooklyn thing?

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Yeah, I totally remember that. She even had a "blonde" girlfriend who she made out with and bought stuff for. Set If Off was a great film with a sad ending. They don't make films like that anymore.
