Motive? (Spoilers)

So is the killer just exacting revenge because his parents tried to kill him? I was unclear on that part. How was he able to stay up there so long? What fate did his parents meet?

When I saw this it got an emotional reaction from me. What an excellent series and watching it mixed up made for a different experience for me. The first movie answered all the questions I had after seeing the second movie first.

Same for me except the biggie. How does he survive to come back in the sequel?
Stabbed in the foot, an axe in the chest, a big fall down a crevice and he's back more terrifying than ever at the hospital creating high level chaos.

Um, this is going to make me sound dense, but was it explained why his parents decided to bury him alive in the snow?

Everything that you see, I owe to spaghetti.

When they show us picture of the family and one of the guys says "What an ugly boy", we could see a mark around his left eye that. When he is being buried in the final scene, we can see that mark again, which is red. I believe he might have some sort of congenital disorder and his parents weren't able to deal with him.

His motives are actually explained better in the second movie.

A sheriff goes to investigate the murders and speaks to the doctor who delivered the boy with the birthmark (the mountain man). He says the boy was stillborn and declared dead but a half hour later started breathing on his own. As he grew up, his parents noticed he had sociopathic tendencies which was why they tried to bury him alive. He survived and came back to the ski lodge and tried to burn them in their sleep, hence the burnt room in the first movie. We're not sure if that's how his parents died but not long after that the lodge shut down. The boy came back their, setting up camp in the basement.
