Picasso perhaps?

Did no one catch the subtle reference to "A young Spanish painter" made by Larita, about the painting she had sent to her? It certainly was Pablo Picasso's style; very avant- guard for the period; and he was in his late 30 yrs, living in Spain, during the time period that this film depicts.

Actually, Picasso was in his late forties when this was set. Hardly young. And he was already an icon, so it wouldn't make much sense to not refer to him by name. Some of his most famous paintings date back to the first decade of the Twentieth century, and I understood that this movie was set in 1928? However, it could have been a subtle reference for the sake of reference.

Good question, I thought that too. I am not knowledgable enough to know if it is just 'in the style of' or an actual representation. But a very good answer. I hadn't taken the effort to work that out, so thank you.
I wonder if it is supposed to be by 'some young Spanish artist' simply cashing in on a style, to show she was just being fasionable?

I thought it was a clear reference to Picasso. It was funny to see the family's reactions to the painting.

Ha! I came on the board to see if anyone else thought that.
