Five reasons for the family to hate her

They hated the woman of 'easy virtue' because she was American, because she was older than their son, because she married without a period of engagement, because she was involved in a court case and because she was Jewess.

reply

No, only two. Strong women tend to be resented by other strong women, and the murder trial, even with a not guilty verdict, made her socially too scandalous. Was she Jewish? I must have missed that bit, I don't recall it being alluded to.

reply

^
Yes, you did.

But I agree it's hard to pick up the English subtleties on the noisy soundtrack of this poorly-made film by a director who prefers burlesque and slapstick.

reply

When was it ever mentioned that she was Jewish?

reply

^ Such things are known but left unsaid. You know how discreet the English are— especially compared to those noisy Americans.

reply

That doesn't answer the question, what makes you think she is Jewish, or Catholic, or any one of those other eccentricities that Americans are famous for?
Actually for a British audience, making her American is enough, any extra categorisation would be superfluous.

reply

It is never mentioned or implied that she is Jewish. What nonsense!

The mother had the stereotypical upper class English outlook on Americans, i.e. that they are uncultured and uncouth.

Thus andy-e-goss is right when he says for a British audience just her being American is enough.

The mother would probably have felt the same about any other nationality, or indeed any other woman her son married, since she wanted John to marry their neighbour's daughter Sarah.

reply

I don't blame her for leaving, that family was just too much. The mother and sisters were ruder than rude.

reply

If her husband really loved her, he would have moved to London with her. Or at least find a better arrangement that gives them more privacy.

reply

Wasn't the mother aware that America was an Ally? They fought on the SAME side of the war. Also. Can't still be sore about us American gaining our independence from them.
