Where, or where, has this dog gone?

Anybody have a clue what happened to this movie, and if it will ever be released?

We keep wondering this also. A good deal of the film was shot in my White Plains, NY neighborhood ad at our veterinarian's office (Animal Hospital of White Plains). I had spoken several times to Liz Manne, the producer - last time was about a year ago. She said that the film was still in post production and was supposed to have a release date in early 2008. It is now May 1, 2008 and still no firm release date. There was always the possiblity that the film might bypass the theatre completely and go directly to HBO Television - as HBO Films funded the project.

On a different note, our neighborhood seems to be on the map now for location scouts. We had a visit recently from a scout that was looking for locations to shoot a new movie with America Ferrara. They took pictures inside and out and will let us know...

It should be released either in theaters or HBO. My god parents own the dog that plays the border collie in the movie, he's like my brother, and they were told it should be released one way or another.

Which dog is owned by your god parents? Actually, it took 5 Border Collies to play the role and 4 of them were mine (Ryder, Shep, Trip, Lucy) that I bred and placed (http://www.holtherborders.com/the_actors.htm) with Birds and Animals Unlimited, the company that provided the animal talent for the movie. One of them (Trip) is now back here with me, Shep is now with a great family in CA, and one that I recommended to the company that I bred, Lucy, was leased for some scenes and is now back with her owners in Atlanta. So are you talking about Lucy or Shep or the 5th one that I believe was played by a Lockeye Kennels Border Collie ?(not sure who owns that one). Ryder is still owned by B&A and has gone on to play major roles in other films too, such as Hotel For Dogs and My Sister's Keeper (2009 releases).

Last I heard about the release was from the book author who said it was still going through some editing, etc and he had been told possibly late summer. But that was several months ago.

5 Border Collies, thats cool, and to answer your question, my god parents own Shep. He's a great great dog and I love him. My god parents also got another Border Collie when they got Shep and he is crraazzzzy energetic but I still love him, haha. His name is Tel.

I worked on "A Dog Year" for the entire shoot and all of those border collies were super sweethearts.
I remember Lucy the best. What a doll-baby.
The trainers were great people, so nice and so professional.
I'd like to see the finished product sometime... at least I have HBO so if it airs on that channel, I'm set.
Too bad the theatrical release is looking so iffy; maybe the success of "Marley and Me" will
help.
Have you heard anything about it recently?

reply

They used my two (at the time, I have three now) American Cocker Spaniels for one shot where the Border Collie bolts out the door and up the street. We live up the street from the Greenridge Ave, White Plains shooting location. Liz Manne, the producer took a liking to Annie and Teddy and asked if she could use them.

The release appears to be in HBO's hands. Whether it stays as a tax loss, goes to TV or is released to the theatres is their call.

I've read most of Jon Katz's books and was looking forward to seeing this movie. I'm listening to "Izzy and Lenore" right now, and Jon Katz was talking about the movie crew building The HBO Memorial Lambing Pen on his farm.

I hope it comes out soon. I loved "Marley and Me", which did well at the box office. We are running into blockbuster season, which may deal it even further. :-(

We're waiting HBO!!

I recently contacted Liz Manne, Producer of 'A Dog Year'. She said that post-production was finally done and that HBO plans to show it on cable this summer. No date is currently set. I'll post when I hear anything further.

According to "A Dog Year" author Jon Katz on his blog (http://blog.bedlamfarm.com/), HBO will broadcast the movie's premiere on September 3.

I posted that yesterday under a new thread <grin>

reply

haha- I guess I'm watching the premier! It's on now and I came to see if there was any trivia or anything. Interesting about all the pups!

I thought it ended rather abruptly. I realize they couldn't put everything from the book in the movie, but they barely touched on how he trained the dog. And, didn't she suggest a name change for the dog? The thought was that he associated his name with the person who had abused him.

Cool. I hope it will be available on DVD soon, because I'm dog-tired of waiting for it.

Just saw, it has been released today online. Torrents will take a while to get seeding, but a certain website has hotfile/fileserve links for it, getting it now! :)
I love Border Collies, and Jeff Bridges is awesome! I can't believe I have only just now heard of this movie!

reply

Thanks for the details. I love border collies as well as Jeff Bridges. I'm very surprised this film slipped through the cracks with all the attention on Jeff in "Crazy Heart."
