this story could make a good movie

Who actually grew up hearing this story? And how many versions did you hear?

Being Latin, born and rise in the U.S. I grew up hearing different versions of this story. I haven't seen this movie because all of the bad reviews, I personally don’t want to watch a terrible movie of a story that freaked me out when I was a kid. Anyways, what I notice from every version I've ever heard was about a mother that went crazy and killed her kids then herself (for whatever reason), now her soul wonders and cries out for her kids. Everything else (before, between, and/or after) pretty much changes every time I heard it. There are even versions where I heard: after murdering her children she hatched up their bodies and buried their remains under the house, backyard, park, camp grounds, or where ever location seems convenient for that time when you’re telling the story.
Like I said this story could make for a good film because there’s so much you can work with and so many versions where you can pick and choose what you would like to use.
