I think this movie treat womens like objects

The "hero" only accept those womans because he wants sex.
The movie make the womens looks like idiots and all she have to offer is sex.
But it´s a interesting film. It lacks of a good point to think about.

This movie treats everyone like idiots, the women are no worse than the men.

-he doesnt accept, he picks them up at will because everyone is so unconcerned.

- sorry but that woman had very nice interior decoration skills to offer. what did men have ?
- also that blonde girl got a lot of dicks. she felt it was "very nice".

But it´s a interesting film. It lacks of a good point to think about.
-yes overall felt like a nightmare with very little to hold on to. except that hole. i guess that was the point, wasnt it ;)
-so, do you have any personal issues with women ?

reply

um, i think it's intentional and it is a part of this society that women are like that... extremely apathetic and only success driven, etc. i don't think anyone in this entire movie shows much emotion at all... and that's why the women look like idiots. that's why it shows the couple kissing and they look completely emotionless, particularly the woman.

i don't think it's a commentary on the women; i think it's a commentary on the nature of that city and how no one derives joy out of anything: people drink bout cannot get drunk... people eat but cannot taste. etc. etc. etc.

Actually, he wants to leave the first relationship because it is completely unfulfilled. And it isn't the sex that is not ok.
Keep in mind that he is exploring this world, and when he makes choices he doesn't really know what they are about. I think he is attracted to this other woman because she seems at first to have some semblance of what is missing in this bland depersonalized world. But she doesn't. That's why the scene in the restaurant is so shocking.
I don't think he knows what is missing, really. When he breaks into the other world briefly, it is a generalized picture of what is not right about the world he is in, but it isn't personal. It too is a bit hazy and depersonalized. It's not just the world he finds himself in that is alienating, he's alienated from himself as well.
But back to your statement, everyone in the movie is "an idiot". None of them are quite people. And there are some in this world that you and I live in that view women that way. So, I can see why it would strike a chord for you, but I don't think that this movie was depicting women in general as depersonalized objects. That is far too specific a point for this movie, as the director was focusing more on happiness as a human being. We follow this guy into a new world(?) neither he, nor we, may ever understand

All his relationships are so mechanical and superficious, even the way he has sex, same old missionary position everytime, no one makes a sound, all his relationships with women (and men) are devoid of emotion.

Exactly. You don't know how hard I laughed during that first scene, because I couldn't help but think of how Stephen Colbert described what sex should be for a woman ("on her back, eyes closed, thinking about something else").

And then the second sex scene, which is exactly the same as the first, made me laugh harder. It just made me realize in this movie the sex is always going to be joyless and no fun. I think he goes after the blonde woman because he thinks he will get more emotion out of her or the sex will be better, then the dinner scene just nails him; she's exactly the same as the brunette, she will be as boring and joyless as the brunette, the sex will be just as boring and joyless as it was with the brunette, etc.

This is one of those films I'm gonna have to go out of my way to recommend to people, which probably will do no good since it's not easy to get. It's so scary in retrospect. It's almost like a neo-David Lynch film.

If the hero was a woman, then the men would appear superficial to her. It is not about the opposite sex. It is about how everyone in this world was seemingly dead to real emotional contact.

The main guy just didn't want to live like that. This film is in no way sexist whatsoever.

"Only wants sex"

Uhm... not true. The opposite... he falls for this blonde, he wants a life with her, she wants a new bathroom with him.

You didn't understand the film. Not at all.
