Smoothest conclave (Spoiler)

How could the media at the end of the movie say it was one of the smoothest (or swiftest, something to the effect) conclaves when you had a bomb blowing up in the sky causing the scattering of people and objects throughout the Vatican and half of Rome?

reply

I thought the same thing. That reporter at the end said that the conclave was one of the " swiftest and smoothest in Vatican history". Did they forget that 3 of the 4 candidates for pope were killed that night, that countless vatican security officials and police officers were killed, that the camerlengo also died, and finally that a gigantic bomb exploded in the sky?

reply

Those events were all outside of the Conclave. The Conclave itself only lasted a few hours.

I believe they ment the voting process itself. The final one, when the cardinals elected the only one of the Preferiti who stayed alive. I can imagine it was very smooth and swift. :)

Maybe, but that was also one of the silliest plot holes.

How in the hell do the cardinals elect someone who wasn't even in the conclave? Conclave starts, doors close, that's it. So he was kidnapped, so what? There are no exceptions.

Also, the "preferiti" are actually named by media and analysts based on popularity. In Vatican history, the majority of Popes were elected outside the "Preferiti".

There's no rule that the Pope has to be elected from among the Cardinals in the conclave. In fact, contrary to what the movie says, the Pope doesn't need to have been a Cardinal at all. It was perfectly legitimate for Cardinal Borgia to be elected without being in conclave. You are right though that the numerous breakings of the conclave that occurred are not normal.

To expand on that, an elected Pope does not even need to be a priest. They do need to be eligible to be a priest. If someone who is not a priest is elected, they will first undergo Holy Orders before being elevated.

All of this doesn't mean it is likely the Conclave would no elect a Cardinal. It is just possible to do so.

apart from the bomb and the heroics of the camerlengo, most of the events we saw happening were all kept under wraps, the public didn't get wind of the murders etc. remember that the reporter said something about 3 of the preferiti being caught in the fire in the church, but only one died there. they also did not know anything about any illuminati threat or of the camerlengo's evil, evil deeds. so it probably did seem pretty smooth and swift as far as pope voting goes.

I partially agree with Shipless. However, the reporter was also being hyperbolic, I believe. Reporters being reporters, you know?

One must remember that the explosion was not too do with the Conclave and, as we saw from the news reports, the public where never aware of the Cardinal deaths and evern the second in St. Peter's Square was believed to be a tourist. For the comment about this Conclave being 'smooth' and 'swift', one must also be aware that Conclave has usually taken days, and even weeks to complete, There was even one conclave that took so long that 5 Cardinals died of old age during Conclave.
