matt's flat decor

What are those 2 large, clear glass things, containing some sort of red liquid (?), sitting on the counter in Matt's flat? I can't tell if they're containers for some red drink, or modern art, or what. There seems to be some variation in what sorta hangs down in the center, but otherwise just about the same. We have rousing discussions each time they show up briefly in shots from his flat...which otherwise doesn't seem to contain much of anything other han those & a bed on the floor. Talk about minimalist living.

On a side note, the writers just do not seem happy unless they have at least one truly, intolerably, obnoxious character on the show. They finally get rid of Helen at the end of Season 3 and then Phillip slithers onto the scene.
