Maybe it's a British thing.

I tried to get into it, but I find the acting and character portrayals extremely lacking and while the story premise is compelling, the writing seems very shallow.

I'm also not a fan of Douglas Henshall. I find him to be a stiff and emotionless actor that seems to be reciting the script from cue cards much of the time.

Are we supposed to find the worn out Helen attractive? She looks old enough to be Stephen's mother, so that must have been a MILF thing for him. She'd be playing the bongos with her knee caps were it not for her pushup bra. How gross is that?

To the original poster: No it's not a British thing.

I too find the writing in Primeval to be weak at times, especially in the first series. Through no fault of the actors, I find alot of the character development to be hackneyed and forced. Many of the guest actors, especially the ones playing teens, are caricatures at best, written by people who haven't been around children much in their lives.

Much of the time, I feel like the writers were like, "And then a Triceratops totally messes up Trafalgar Square and-what, this show is about people? Okay, well, uh, Lester polishes his shoes and it's funny, but then the T-rex rips up a hot dog stand! Yeah!"

One major example comes to mind. The bit with the Diictodons. This woman is having a baby and no one in the hospital pays her any mind after she checks in. Once it's evacuated, she's left there in the delivery room and Cutter and Abby are forced to deliver the baby. But... Abby literally handled an animal and went to handling a newborn child without even washing her hands.

That whole scene was totally implausible, and only existed so that they could squeeze some "cute" and "funny" moments in between all of the creature incursion stuff. Like Cutter getting shot in that very same episode wouldn't have carried just as much weight. Oh, and Cutter's "slow dying, Conner fight the good fight" scene. Cliched.

Again, this is through no fault of the actors. Jason Flemyng really carries series three on his shoulders, and Alexander Siddig is always a pleasure.

It's okay not to like the writing. I do wish people on these forums would stop acting so uptight, just because someone doesn't share their opinion. It's what a discussion forum is for.

The biggest problem was they never properly addressed why Helen did what she was doing. And saying was crazy didn't cut it. Changing it every season didn't help either.

They should have added Christine Johnson and her parallel military anomaly program in the second season. Much better villain.

I couldn't disagree more. Cutter was charismatic and had a strong presence that suited him as the leader of the gang. Nobody else that came after him had the same qualities (least of all Matt).

What constitutes young male TV beauty is similar in N.America vs the UK, but for females, the beauty standards seem quite different. Frankly, as a female, I thought every single female looked absolutely ridiculous and out of place, in their ridiculous high heels and fake eye lashes and overdone makeup and hairdoes. In mean REALLY, it makes them insanely inadequate for their characters.
The one female I liked was Abbie before they turned her into a Spice Girl.

However, I devoured the show online, had so much fun, when I wasn't laughing with them I was laughing at them, it was a win-win situation.

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**
