Two things that drive me crazy about Primeval

I just finished seasons 4 and 5. I love the show but 2 things drive me crazy:

1. Abby's morose attitude. Did I miss a plot line that explains why she is always so depressed?

2. Becker and all military are minimized. There's a huge rampaging dinosaur or other creature so we send the computer geek, a mysterious man from the future with an unclear background (to me) and a zookeeper?

Just curious if anyone else had noticed this....

I love the show too and I agree with your two gripes.

Also I think Abby looks worse as the seasons go by. She doesn't seem as cute as she was in season one.

We got two seasons of Abby bending and stretching in dayglo micro-pants. Now we have to atone for our sinful thoughts and bear witness to her damaged soul. RIP micro-pants Abby, you remain in our hearts

I have been saying the same thing! I don't like her at all now. I think it's got something to do with her experience in the Cretaceous. She definitely looks more sad and depressed after her return while Connor has moved on and has regained his usual self.

This is the only explanation I could think of :O

Agree 100%. Abby's is the best written character, but the worst make-over.

How true. Whoever was the actress' hairstylist in Seasons 4 and 5 must have done this on his spare time and have been in charge of the floor cleaning as his main function because poor Abby looks like a platinum floor mop most of the time. And a depressed mop on top of that. Still hot enough for a geek like Connor though (or at least someone who felt and behaved like one, as he wasn't too shabby a chap after all...).

I love Abby, her character is one of the better written, she knows her reptiles and dinos, and can shoot. She mostly sticks to that skill-set, which is a reasonable outlook on a character. However, I can not stand her Spice Girl hairdo and makeup (fake lashes, please!) after she returns from the Triassic.
I would have like to see more of them in the Triassic, that was one of the better parts for me.

As for Becker, he is hot as hell... I suspect he's got the goods to be a future James Bond.
PlayGirl military personnel, wow, realistic? no, fun... yes :)

Agreed. What really irritated me in the first series was that they kept talking about dinosaurs all the time, when not one of the creatures in the first series was a dinosaur.

reply

That annoyed the Hell out of me, too. Whilst I accept that many 'lay' persons think any prehistoric reptile is a dinosaur, an expert - as Cutter supposedly was - would never make such a mistake.

reply

Slightly forgivable though. Remember, most of the ARC team was made up of paramilitary personnel, people in monkey suits and computer tech geeks.

Cutter and company probably fell back on the term "dinosaur" just to keep the conversation from derailing.

ARC didn't exist in the first series. Cutter, a palaeontologist, and a group of extinct-animal nerds like Connor and his friends, would certainly not use the incorrect term among themselves, and would be pointing out the error to anyone else who mistakenly referred to a gorgonopsid or a mosasaur as a dinosaur.

I find Primeval an amusing series, but it could have been much better with minimal cost. My major gripe with it is that it proposes this reality in which time portals to past and future occur and creatures, usually dangerous ones come through. OK, I will go along with that tenet, but then why don't they let the main characters meet these challenges with proper gear? These characters know like no other how dangerous the confrontation with the creatures from past and future can be, not only the risk of predation, but also the risk of infection. Yet every time they go out without any protective gear and place themselves in unnecessary danger. It is completely unrealistic even within the given fictional reality. Episode 3.5 was the most annoying to me for this very reason. Even after they have established that the fungus is extremely virulent and highly contagious, they hunt the creature without even simple masks. Even after it has been demonstrated to them that a simple touch from the creature is enough to pass on the fungus, they climb the stairs holding the same bannister that the creature just touched, sit down in the back of the van where the creature has been going nuts, etc. etc.

This problem is found in the majority of sci-fi fare and I find it so unnecessary. Why do the supposedly smart characters have to act like suicidal idiots. Is it impossible for screen writers to create suspense in a more intelligent way?

Thing that annoyed me was in the first episode how the little boys mum didn't hear the dinosaur when it smashed through his window. -.-

And her "you clean up your room this minute" type comment at the end was just stupid. I assume it was supposed to be funny. Epic fail.
