Seems fascinating to an outsider how can make a film about Israel & not include a bit about Gaza, even in US, a half black prez was elected and blacks figure prominently in any film made after 1990

reply

Gaza wouldn't enter into the day to day lives of anyone living outside the range of the missiles.

Even though I'm an political activist, I still found it refreshing to see a film NOT dealing directly with the Middle-East BIG PICTURES. It was an honest look at other problems with Israeli society, much like in the rest of the Western world: alienation and loneliness.

If you want to read any political meaning into the film, it can be in the denial of most Israelis to the reality that defines our relations with the Arabs.

Interesting, what do you do as a political activist, Ive always that pol-activism would be up my alley.

I'm involved with several Arab-Jewish groups, seeing a solution that's outside the box of conventional thinking, opting for a solution that based on neither Zionism nor Palestinian nationalism, but on common values and goals. Also, as a teacher, I use the classroom, as much as possible without crossing a line, to make my students think about perspectives they haven't been given in their socialization process.

I loved the film in question, and, as I wrote, Gaza is as far from Tel Aviv as China might be. Which might be part of the problem.

I recommend Eitan Fox's film Walk on Water, which deftly combines the demands of a genre film with some fascinating political ideas. I've commented on that board's thread, if you want to read my opinions.

As was said before, unless you are directly affected by something it won't have anything to do with your day to day life. I'm sure there are people who would love to see a film that doesn't include a situation that has negatively impacted them. Many go to movies to escape realism for a little while.

I have seen many films made since 2000 where there isn't a black character, or where the token black character is one of the first to get killed.
