Other really good Israeli Movies

In the past year, I have seen both this movie and Bufor (Beaufort). I know they are not the same genre at all, but I greatly enjoyed both of them. I was looking for more great Israeli films. Any ideas?

I loved 'Saint Clara' a fairly grim youth comedy with a more or less feel-good ending, lots of memorable characterizations. Loved 'Salah Sabiti' a comedy rescued from the formulaic by Topol, who mostly uses his eyebrows. I haven't yet seen 'Hill 24 doesn't answer' but it's about two mismatched soldiers in a god-forsaken observation post during the War for Independence. and it looks like it might have some of the darkness and tension that permeates Beaufort.

Try Ushpizin (check it out on IMDB). It is very good.

I recommend "Lemon Tree" and "Late Marriage."

Israel has been producing some very nice movies, especially in the last 10 years. I would recommend one of my favorites: Someone to Run With (Mishehu Larutz Ito), made from the book of the same name by David Grossman. Make sure to watch the music clip, too.

If you have difficulty in obtaining that movie, send me a PM and I will try to help.

I would heartily recommend the film "The Flat". It is a documentary of a family learning about a disconcerting part of their family history after finding clues to it while cleaning out the Grandmothers flat after she dies at the age of 98.

I like Ben Loke'ah Bat (1982), about a girls left at a boarding school while her parents are with 'Doctors Without Borders', mostly for the scene when she is dropped off and is told "Don't be shy, the boys and girls shower together here. You'll get used to it." The look of horrific confusion is priceless.
