Remake.

I really liked this film. But, it's frustrating that it's an (unacknowledged) remake of another (minor classic) film. You can't talk about this fact with anyone who hasn't seen either (or both) of the films -- without giving away the ending of either (or both) films!

ARGH.

I like the original much better -- but Yella is still pretty damn cool.

And really well-acted.

Speaking of acting... and remakes...

When an American studio remakes it... the casting:

Yella/Kelly: Tina Fey (or if they want to go younger, Selma Blair)
Philipp/Phillip: Paul Bettany
Ben/Ben: Kevin McKidd

Ha!

And which original film would that be?

Womanhood,

Geesh. How do you respond when someone does something that's *actually* offensive?

Almost as absurdly, but not quite.

Just give him a hint. Like:

The movie he's talking about have some Vietnam war scene.

Am I correct? ;)

Or if you mean THE OTHER film, from 2006 (I guess), then - well - this one it's a real remake of the one I'm talking about ;).

Some have compared it to "Carnival of Souls."

There is no doubt that YELLA is a hommage/remake/reworking of CARNIVAL OF SOULS. I already mentioned some striking similarities in another threat: the bridge, the ending sequence, the woman's "passage", and there are more: the man that is always near her, threatening her; the hotel theme; the only major element that's missing is the carnival itself.

No doubt indeed. We watched it first time tonight and my girlfriend already noticed the similarities with Carnival of Souls halfway the movie, before even seeing the very similar end. And since it was full of symbolism, maybe you could interpret the world of high finance and hedge-funds as a carnival on it's own.

SPOILERS Carnival of Souls and also Mulholland Drive, as the whole plot when she becomes this tough businesswoman is how she wanted herself to be. Just like Mulholland Drive with the failed actress who dreams of being in a mystery thriller.
Yella is really more than an hommage, it's a freaking rip-off.
