Patty Duke

I'm very disappointed to learn that Patty Duke is no longer
the lead actress in this film. I don't know why she's not in
the film anymore. But I do know that she is one of the greatest
actresses in America. This film will not be as good as it would
have been with Ms. Duke in it.

I agree with you 100% but you can still see Patty Duke in the play in Spokane
from late November thru mid December. Just copy & paste this link below....

Thanks for agreeing and for reminding me that Patty (Anna)
is doing the play in Spokane. I may just fly out there to
see it. As an actress and playwright I love good theater
and a good performance. I saw Anna twice in Oklahoma on
Broadway. And had the pleasure of meeting her and her
wonderful husband Mike.

Have you even looked at the other cast members? David Ogden Stiers is a very talented, funny man. The new up and comers look promising, and Julia Duffy! She is great. Her work is very well respected, and might I add, I think she'll add a different flavor to the film. Not to say anything against Patty Duke...she's great, but Julia Duffy is just as talented in her own unique way. What you have to remember...this movie isn't solely based on Patty Duke's character. It's an ensemble film.

reply

I'm sure the entire cast will do a wonderful job. Nothing against them.
I don't know anything about them, except for David Ogden Stiers. He was
great in MASH. I understand that he and Patty (Anna) Duke are friends.
They've acted together in the past and even played husband and wife.
Together they have great acting chemistry. He must be in an uncomfortable
position now that she is no longer his film partner. As for Julia Duffy,
I know the name, but I'd have to look up what she's done in order to know
who she is. My favorite actors and actress are from film's of the '30's,
40's, 50's, and 60's. There are some very fine actors and actress today.
But, in my opinion, neither them nor the film industry is what it once
was. As an actress and playwright I feel entitled to my opinion. I have
met many actresses and some actors. I've even worked with a few of them as
a background film actress. I've met a few of the "greats." They were
all very nice to me. However, out of all of them the one who is truly
for "real" is Patty (Anne) Duke. She is an exceptional human being and
a very gifted actress. She is the reason why I wanted to see
this film in the first place. I wouldn't have heard of this film if
it wasn't for the fact that I saw it listed on her website.

reply

I am sure you have heard of JULIA DUFFY kitb8... ;-) Take a look at her credits and her pics. Also..does anyone know if JULIA replaced PATTY in this movie ?? Seems like they could play the same role....Thanks... :)

Ps..i love Julia and Patty.. =)

reply

djdeckades, someone deleted their entry which included my entry about Julia Duffy. I looked her up on IMDb and then remembered her from the Bob Newhart Show. Then I was able to put the name to the face. Her picture should be on this board. She replaced Patty in this movie. Julia's a good actress. Not one of my favorites though. As far as casting goes, I feel Patty would have been a better fit for the part. It's like camparing hamburger to steak.

I agree with you that Patty Duke is a great actress, However; Julia Duffy is wnoderful too. I had an opertunity to see some of this movie filmed and it is a great movie. For all of you that don't intend on seeing it due to Patty Duke no longer in it you will be missing out!

reply

They're all good actors im sure. i found out about since im a fan of blake. his performance as eric in judging amy was really good. i cant wait to watch the film! you should watch a film for its story or its actors. mostly for the story even though you dont know who's in it.

RATHER FACETIOUS!!!!

Hey Kitb8 - Sounds like someone close to this film commenting so don't sweat it.
I wanted to tell you I saw Oklahoma w/ Patty Duke 3 times. And also met her & husband Mike (opening night during intermission). They were both absolutely charming & gracious & just plain wonderful.
Only time will tell which actress will fare better in the role. My bet's on Patty too.
Hope to see you in Spokane. Should be there end of November or early December.

reply

Hey j-suna- Thanks for your concern. 3 times that's great! I'm glad
that you got to meet Mike and Anna. They are two very special people.
I've gotten to know them. We've been corresponding by email now for
three years. My distant cousin is Annie Sullivan (Helen Keller's
teacher). Naturally, the bases of my connection to Anna is through
Annie and Helen. My bet's on Patty (Anna) too. It would be nice to
see you in Spokane, but we'll have to wait for a different Anna
play. I found out a few days ago that Anna won't be doing this play.

I have met and worked with Anna Pearce. We got along very well. I respect her as an actess and as a human being. She has done amazing things in the mental health field. She is definitly a great treasure.
On the other hand you can't base the quality of a film soley on the involvement of one actor. I was involved with this film. I enjoyed working with all of the actors. If you decide not to see this film because Anna is no longer attatched to it, you will miss some incredible performances. Kelly Stables gives a fantastic perfomance. She is very funny. David Ogden Stiers gives a very funny and heart warming performance. By far the best is Blake Bashoff. He is a fairly new and young actor. He gives a performance that is amazing! He will make you cry. I have worked with some amazing actors, but Blake is one that you should keep an eye out for. He is destined to do great things.
You are totally intitled to your own opinion. In my opinion, if you choose not to watch this film, it would be your loss. You could also say that because I was involved with this film I have a tainted opinion. Maybe I do. But as far as the performances go, they will speak for themselves.
There are always cercumstances surrounding why certain talent start out on a film then drop out. Unless you know why, you really can't judge a film until you see it. If you did, you would miss a lot of good films and performances. This is not an uncommon occurance. As an actress yourself you should know that. What if you were the one to come in after another actress had started a film then was replaced? I would think you would want people to at least give you a chance to prove yourself in the role. You would want it to be based on your ability and not the name of the actress who came before. Don't you think?

reply

TOUCHE LISA!

You are absolutely right! I never said that I would or wouldn't see it.
Others have said that. I was looking forward to Anna's performance as
I thought that this was a good character for her to play. Naturally,
I'm disappointed. I think most people do base seeing a film on one actor
or actress. We've all gone to see a film or play that we wouldn't have
seen otherwise if it weren't for who's in it. As you well know, it's the
star power theory. The film in question would draw more people into the
box office with Patty Duke's name attached to it. That's just the reality
of it. Sounds like Blake Bashoff is worth checking out. Yes, you're right
a replacemnet actor or actress should be given a chance to prove themselves
in a role. And no one should base not seeing a film because of it. But
for me, the drawing power of this film would have been Patty Duke.

So, you love Patty Duke...that's wonderful...I love a lot of actors, too, but one actor doesn't necessarily make the film. This week, the Calendar Section of The LA Times wrote: "None of last year's top three grossing films -- 'Star Wars Episode III,' 'The Chronicles of Narnia' and 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' -- were driven by a movie star." Does anyone remember the high-grossing, indie film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?" What big names were in that film? Actually, the article went on to say that studios are in favor of more manageable genre pictures and family films, instead of star-driven films. This is obviously a family film that will bring families to the theater to watch good, clean-cut entertainment. Hoorah for the filmmakers that give us something enjoyable for the whole family!!

reply

I don't think using My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a good example of unknown stars. Though Nia Vardalos was unknown at the time there was also Lainie Kazan, John Corbett, Andrea Martin & Michael Constantine. All of whom I
have loved over the years & would be happy to pay to see. To me they are all "BIG STARS".

reply

Funny you should mention Lainie Kazan. I am currently working on a production with Lainie. She is a wonderful lady. I have enjoyed working with her.

reply

Hey Lisa - You know Lainie & Anna got along famously during the short lived
"Karen's Song". I'm sure if you mention Anna to Ms. Kazan it'll bring a smile to her face. And tell her Anna's doing an interview with Rick Mckay (she knows him) ..... and that I love her too.
Thanks, Jeff

reply

Lainie and I discussed Anna and yes she did smile. She wrapped today. I was sad to see her go. She was wonderful to work with. I have her email so I will let her know you love her too. I didn't get a chance to read this before now. Sorry. I am planning to see her for sure in November when she performs in Palm Springs. I may get a chance to work with her again soon. At least if she has her way. :)
Thanks for responding.

Just wanted to clarify, my response was not to kitb8 - so I deleted it, but - truth be told - my mother thought it would be a funny joke to give me the middle name "facetious" - i had it legally removed as soon as i turned 18.

Thanks for clearning that up.

I'm a producer and writer of the film. Patty Duke is a dear friend whose support and enthusiasm for this script meant a great deal to me personally. I was sorry too that her participation in the film, and then in the play, did not work out, but I hope we will collaborate again on another project soon. Though her departure was certainly a blow to the filming, we were very grateful that we were able to continue production, with Julia Duffy taking a lead role with virtually no notice. Patty Duke will appear onstage in Spokane this April in the comedy "Humble Boy," and if you can travel to the northwest this spring, I know she will be worth the trip to see her performance there.
