Difference between R and Unrated

I saw the R rated version at WalMart and on the back it was labeled 85 minutes. The Unrated version is 75 minutes. I watched the unrated version, has anyone seen the R rated version and know what the difference is. Or was it just a typo?

reply

Ive seen both the R rated version cut a few lines during the Jamie kennedy scene that about all i really noticed. The R rated also has 10 min of outakes that arnt part of the uncut version.

im confused!

Isent the unrated version supposed to have more nudity, etc?

So how can it have less playing time ?

reply

when a movie is marked "unrated" it is a ploy by the movie suppliers to increase sales to those people who are hoping for something even more salacious. So far i have not found a movie marked "unrated" that is even worth watching, so perhaps the unrated refers to it being something that doesnt even rate.

Unrated means the movie has not been rated by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Most older unrated movies are just not rated by the MPAA because they are generally PG in content, however newer films are unrated because of excessive gore or violence which would have to be cut in order to obtain a rating, or they would get NC-17 rating for original version but they want to avoid that.

Example from Wikipedia:
The makers of the critically-successful film Requiem for a Dream (2000) released it unrated, rather than endanger any commercial success with an NC-17 rating. The MPAA had threatened using that rating because of an orgy depicted in the movie's climax.
Most NC-17 films are released in cinemas, either in an edited, R-rated version or in its original version. Most films that were rated NC-17 would be re-edited to get R ratings for United States theatrical release, and later get released as both the original, unrated "uncut" version and the censored R-rated version on the home video market (e.g. Basic Instinct).
(I assume movie has to be rated to play in american cinemas, thats why the Unrated version goes directly to DVD)

There are plenty of good Unrated movies, it just means they contain lots of inappropriate stuff for younger audience.

you don't have a clue buddy. most new "unrated" films add a couple minutes of filler, don't re-submit for re-rating and *presto* an unrated movie for kiddie idiots like you to buy.

reply

Excuse me BUDDY, I wont discuss your "theory" about fillers and Unrated movies, anyone wanting to know more about ratings can look at a very detailed article on Wikipedia. If a R movie allows violence without blood and your movie has both is the blood a filler?

And one more thing, I cant imagine what your problem is for behaving like a complete ass without any cause, for your information Im probably older than you, a woman and I never bought a movie in my life, although Ive probably seen more of them than you.
Anyway, bye and have a happy life (it will be hard, I know).

Actually you're both right. Some movies just add some pointless footage and announce it as "unrated" so people think they're getting more for their money...which they're not. However in SOME cases they do add footage back in that the MPAA thought was too strong for an R. So both things do happen but I think the first one is a lot more frequently used than the other.

In the case of Walmart, it is entirely about sales. Walmart does not sell NC-17 movies at all, and will not sell R movies to people under 18. The rules are different for unrated movies. Its a way to appear moral by "protecting" people from objectionable content, while still selling it.

They sound like Blockbusters. They won't carry NC-17 movies but carry unrated no problem. Also they carry "softer" R rated cuts of movies. The movie "Eating Out" had two shots of full frontal male nudity and still got an R. For some reasons it was released with and without those two shots and Blockbusters would only carry the ones WITHOUT the nudity! Maybe it's just me but I don't think anyone is going to be so shocked to see two nude guys in an R rated movie...and they were good-looking guys too:):) Other video stores carry the uncut one.

And sometimes the unrated is a dvd release of a movie that should have been R in theaters but was watered down for a pg13 rating and crowd. The Unrated is there to make the people that avoided the watered down garbage in hopes of violence, nudity and language. Pretty much the same thing as the NC-17 garbage, but at least they water down movies for an R bc this country is so stupid about NC-17 movies. There is no reason to water down for a pg13 other than to get more ticket sales for the easily offended or under 17 crowd. Live Free or Die Hard was the worst example of this I can recall.

Any movie in a series of R movies should be R but they made that pg13 and released a unrated dvd. Sometimes if you pay attention you'll noticed movies will say "not yet rated" You think it's because they just haven't rated it yet, but it seems they do that a lot when a movie should be R and its as if they don't want to scare away fans of a series too early by saying its pg13 so they do the "not yet rated" crap until a few weeks or so before release and then spring the garbage. Usually though if you know a movie should be R and it says "not yet rated" it's bc they are trying to get it to a pg13 or they are pull that crap. Pretty much any movie released after 1999 has fallen victim to this Unrated DVD crap.

Check out "Sex Drive". I liked both the Rated and Unrated versions. Instead of having a special features section on the dvd with bloopers, outtakes, and deleted scenes, they put all of those scenes in the Unrated version and it's actually like watching a different movie but the Rated version comes off looking more like the real movie so make sure you watch that version first. I found it to be a very funny road movie.

Check out Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning if you want to see a great "Unrated" film. It's so much more bad-a** and gorier.

Lust, Caution was far more erotic, sensual, and plain better Unrated than R.
