Has anyone seen this movie yet?

seen it tonight, quite a movie. but personally for me the highlight was the musical score :)
i wouldn't call it strictly biographical/historical.
to keep things objective, feel free to read about Vladimir Vetrov @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Vetrov

Funny you mention the score, because what attracted me to the movie was Clint Mansell's score. I've heard it already and am eager to see how it works with images.

Although I wish Carion had used Philippe Rombi again, after Joyeux Noel: that was a marvellous score too; and Rombi needs to work more often.

Saw it yesterday. I think it is a great movie with a great subject. Emir Kusturica is also a formidable acteur. (I had seen him in La Veuve de Saint-Pierre) and again he does a great job. Still it is not easy to follow the intrigue... because of differences in languages and accents. Want to see it again. And recommend it fully.

I saw this last night in New York as part of the annual "Rendezvous with French Cinema" film festival. Carion was present for a Q&A after the screening. The film was well received by the audience. Carion also mentioned that it will be distributed in the US by a new company called Neo-Classic Films with the tentative release date for the summer of 2010.

I thought Kusturica was great, especially since he had to act while speaking Russian and French, two languages in which he was not fluent. Apparently he speaks Serbian and English according to Carion.

I was also surprised by how much Fred Ward resembles Ronald Reagan.

So that was Fred Ward in the trailer. Interesting. Looks good.

After a long wait, it seems I'll finally watch this movie. It's coming out in Portugal on the 5th of August.

I just watched this movie, I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. I do need to see it again, especially that the ending confused me. Can anybody recommend similar spy movies? Spoilers ahead:

Can someone explain to me why was Chekov saved rather than Sergei? Must watch the conversation with Dafoe at the end again.

The film is extremely well done. It is a remarkable period piece and a very intelligent spy thriller that could had come out of a le Carré novel.

here's my take:
Sergei was part of a network, Chekov was a free-agent. If someone hadn't been given up, the KGB would likely have discovered the network, as they had begun an investigation based upon the discovery of many of their agents by US intel. Also, the US didn't bother to inform France on their actions, so there wasnt a lot of time to safeguard Chekov, despite the promise that had been made by Jacques, the DST operative.

So, despite the fact that Chekov seemingly gave them far, far more than had ever been delivered by Sergei's people, he was sacrificed. He was reckless, as well.

I'm sure, in the minds of the US et al., it was a judgement call. Chekov seemed to be fairly fatalistic about his prospects, as well. Evidently, he anticipated the end-game fairly astutely.

in a world where everyone has an opinion on everything, you get a lot of bad opinions - me

Don't you mean "Chekov was part of a network, Sergei was a free-agent."?

reply

i now dont remember the names. my point was that the fellow who was arrested was a free-agent, the fellow who was not had a network. the lesson being, i suppose, dont get involved with intrigue or telling truth to power without one.
