Why was it called 'Smith'

First of all I gotta say I love the show and it really sucks that it was canceled.
But my question and something I couldn't get from the pilot was why did that cop said "we have an unknown person, Smith" and from there the name of the show.If anyone knows please tell me I'm curious to know.

IIRC the name "Smith" was used by the FBI to refer to the suspects in the museum robbery since they didn't know their actual names. Sort of like "John Doe"
