They have blackwashed the main characters

The main character, Luke, is now a black guy, Jahzir Kadeem Bruno.

Interestingly, Jahzir Kadeem Bruno don't have any character assigned in iMDB and in the wikipedia he appears as "The Guy", sharing the character with Chris Rock (who plays the adult version), indicating he's the main character and the one who tells the story. In a nutshell: he's Luke.

The grandmother of Luke is played by Octavia Spencer, so everything fits: the good guys are black, the evil witches are white, or mostly white. You know the drill: black is good, white is evil.

I never heard of the original, until I saw the trailer for the new one.

I think blackwashing or racebending is great for a lot of reasons--be it for social progress, giving old characters a new look and personality, and just for the aesthetics of it. Admittedly, I quite enjoy the gnashing of teeth by the hardcore fans when it happens. But whenever you guys complain about it, just just come across as nauseating and whiney. And the main white witch does not hate black people, she hates children. Albeit, I thought the trailer almost alluded that she might be racist, but I think the punchline was part of the joke.

It's like the 2016 version of Ghostbusters. It's unfortunate how the fighting over that movie became so politicized. I happen to be a big fan of the leading ladies involved in it, but in the end, the movie wasn't very good. It was a bad situation for everyone involved.

So relax, you still have the original to go back to. If anything, this new version will bring attention to the old one which will always exist.

If you're a creatively bankrupt hack then yeah sure I guess

The world has changed. If you’re feeling nostalgic about a lily-white world with white men in charge, there is an entire catalogue of classic Movies that you can watch. In fact, there is a cable TV channel dedicated to this concept: TCM.

As for myself and many others, I will enjoy seeing black and POC talent appear in films and entertainment as they provide their own interpretations of characters in settings and franchises that had previously been the domain held by whites. I would like to see Miles Morales becoming the permanent and main Spider-Man. He has breathed new life into the character.

I'm sure you can fulfill your fetish by watching BET and leaving established characters alone, yes? Or will you also be championing an all Vietnamese reboot of Boyz n the Hood? How about a petition to get more Maoris in Bollywood? What's that you say, you only care about black people? Yes we know

Trump has lost the election and the last gasp of the white male patriarchy is coming to an end. As a result of this, I shall now feast on your tears as I enjoy some camomile tea while listening to the Indigo Girls on compact disc.

Have a nice day :)

Nice shift of topic there kid, can't argue the point so time for ad hominem I guess. Go be anti white elsewhere, racist

What's coming to an end is the western protestant society.

And as a matter of fact, that's the society where women have enjoyed more rights than anywhere else.

It's being replaced by Hispanics, Blacks and Muslims. Check women's right in Africa, Muslim countries and South America. Because that's what's coming. 😄

there will always be people with no taste at all :), and even worse with a total lack of originality, so they have to copy everything that was invented by others, well good luck with that. This film was pure trash compared to the version with Anjelica Huston. There are ver

I haven't seen this yet was a bit bothered by the race change. But I am more bothered at forcing in an extra character into the story just for the sake of it. Talking about the 3rd kid that is turned into a mouse. Come to think of it the trailer I saw doesn't even seem to even bother showing the other 2 kids who are turned into mice. In the original book and movie, there was only 2 kids turned into mice. The main protagonist Luke and the other kid Bruno. Some might think this is nitpicky but it will make the movie a little longer than necessary imo. Then again I may not get to watch it anyway since it is only available on HBO's streaming service.

reply

Probably they needed a third mouse to get to every box checked.

You have Luke, now a charming black kid, checked ✓
You have Bruno, a white kid with an actor that looks like a pig, to play the cuck, checked ✓
You'll need either a female or a Hispanic courageous badass character. That'll be the third mouse, checked ✓

So you have everything: good black characters (Luke and the grandmother), good and courageous female/Hispanic (the third mouse), cuck white males (Bruno), and evil white characters (the witches). Checked checked checked checked ✓

reply

Exactly. Sigh. This has become so normal in film that eventually they'll have to find new boxes to check.

FFS, you expect better from Zemeckis. This is a travesty.

And this is after we gave them 40 acres and a mule. How ungracious.

YOU REALLY CANT SEE THE REAL WORLD PAST YOUR OWN HANG UPS,CAN YOU?

reply

Good thing I don't plan on watching it. The one with Angelica Huston was better.

reply

Yeap. She was absolutely brilliant.

Anne Hathaway seems too young to me, she would have been great in the role if she was 10 or 20 years older, though.

reply

You're joking! :O She's in this?! She's too pretty!

reply

Anjelica Huston was 39 when Witches was released in 1990.
Anne Hathaway will be 38 when the 2020 version is released.

reply

I disagree that Anne Hathaway looks too young for the part. If you read the original book, the Grand High Witch is supposed to look as if she’s a young beautiful woman in her early 20s. Anjelica Huston was amazing, but she was clearly not a woman in her 20s when the original Witches movie came out. It didn’t bother me though, I could still totally buy that she called all the shots.

No, Anne Hathaway was perfectly cast for the concept of what the Grand High Witch was originally supposed to look like, and at 37 or 38 she still looks very young. That, I have no problem with at all. What bothered me was the way the entire character was executed in this movie. There is no subtlety for this character at all, which is a big deal because the way witches operate and stay alive depends on how well they could be subtle at what they do. It is reiterated over and over in the book that a witch never gets caught. Yes, witches hate children and look for ways to dispose of them, but they are not open about it like they are in this movie. ESPECIALLY the Grand High Witch!

Anne Hathaway not being given a face like her character had in the book is an atrocity in and of itself, but that is the least of her character’s problems in this movie. She is only supposed to lose her temper when there’s only other witches around, but she is very short-tempered with adult humans and there are multiple instances in which she could’ve easily gotten caught. She is also too open with adult humans about her distaste for children. We find out at the end of the book that people knew her as a woman who loved mankind, and gave to charity, but anyone in this movie could easily see her for who she is!

I remember the 1990 being great, although apparently it neutered Dahl’s dark ending, and the new one restores it (to a degree).

reply

I don't care

reply

What the..? The grandmother is very clearly Norwegian and that culture plays a pretty significant role in the story.

Anyway, who cares about this shit? I thought it already had the ultimate movie adaptation.

Must be awful for you.

LMAO

Eat a d kukuxu.

-a white guy who's not offended by race bending.

reply

I'm sure there are black folk who don't get offended by racial slurs so following your logic that makes racial slurs A-OK

reply

To be honest, I don't give a shit about guys like that. At then end of the day, it's just more name-calling.

I'm more interested about how often the name-calling include things like "faggot" or (this case) "eat a dick". For some reason I don't fully understand, there seems to be a lot of homophobia bottled up in modern left.

reply

I feel the same way, it's not so much the insults it's the sheer hypocrisy. The usual "rules for thee but not for me" bullshit.

reply

It just looks ridiculous every time they do it.

I remember years ago I was.at a movie theater and they were showing trailers before the main movie

They showed the trailer for the animated spiderman, it has spiderman doing all these moves, lots of action, and then at the end of the trailer spiderman takes off his mask and reveals he is a black kid.

And then everyone in the theater laughed.
