What was Erlendur eating?
What was Erlendur eating after he found Eva outside his apartment and let her sleep on his couch?
It looked like a skull of a small animal/fish at one point. Is it a traditional food in Iceland or something??

Svið, or singed sheep heads, is traditional Icelandic food. It has a really weird taste, either you really love it or you really hate it. I myself love it, especially the eye and tongue. It sounds disgusting (and eating the eye is disgusting, even though I like the taste) but it does taste great. It is supposed to be eaten cold.
share I married an Icelandic man and we went to visit his family after we got married. They asked what I would like for dinner and I said sheeps heads because I figured that after that I could eat anything!! It was pretty good except for my father-in-law kept makiing squishing noises and was threatening to eat the eyeball. He said when you did eat it, you could hear a pop. It wasnt bad stuff. I like the hangikjot(sorry, i know i spelled that wrong)...... the smoked lamb! We get it sent from iceland twice a year. I'm going this year for Christmas and cant wait for it!
I am going to go see this movie tomorrow. I have become a bit obsessed with Icelandic movies after seeing Englar alheimsins and 101 Rekjavik.
It's pretty good. The tounge is the best part.

The singed sheep head is a traditional icelandic food. It's one of the meals that are eaten for example during christmas. It tastes exactly as lamb tastes :P. Don't prejudice it.. come to iceland and have a taste. I personally like it cooked, others like it when it has cooled down.
Other typical icelandic foods are:
- sheep meat jelly (trust me it's really good!!! name may not appeal to you but still it's good food!!!)
- Ptarmigan
- Skate (fermented and salted fish... and always eaten on december the 23rd)
- Icelandic sausages (lamb meat)
- Smoked saddle of pork
- Smoked lamb
- Salted lamb meat soup
- And of course the unforgettable icelandic lamb itself
- Icelandic smoked salmon (among the best in the world including scotland & norway)
- Puffin (maybe not so so typical.. smoked or not smoked)
- Skyr (very special icelandic yogurt, only kind in the world)
- dried fish
- shark (fermented and salted.. this is really good!!! you don't even need brennivin or at least i don't :P )
- Various soured meats (bloddpudding/liver pudding/ram testicles/breast of lamb)
- and so much more
Now all this has been eaten since the first settlers of iceland so please don't think of this as something disgusting.. always have a try before judging ;)

Thanks for all the info! You guys seem to like lamb so much. :)
I didn't think it was disgusting but the little teeth scared me! I remember Eva saying it was Erlendur's favorite. :)
But don´t think this food is the only thing Icelanders eat, the food Erlendur was eating is only an adverties (spelling?)for the icelandic food. We eat pizza and hamburgers to, so don´t think that we only eat a lambs head or something.
sharethanks for the info
the movie plus your article really opens my appetite:P
I love the movie for its extremely beautiful landscape, the food, and the never-fade-away questioning about genetics and how to deal with it.
Right now I really want to visit iceland!!!
True, we do also eat hamburgers and pizzas (and a lot of them too) but the Svið Erlendur bought was actually a take-away at the city coach-station BSI. And you can actually buy Sheephead there as it is one of the only sheephead-take-aways in Iceland.
If I remember correctly Eva said that the Kjötsúpa, the meat-soup, was Erlendur´s favorite food, according to her mother. The Kjötsúpa is a lamb-soup with potatoes, turnips, carrots etc.
The reason why Sheephead, Blood Sausage, Haggis, Dried Fish and Ram´s Testicles were eaten back in the old days was because of extreme poverty and possible famine during the little ice-age. The only vegetables that grew in Iceland were potatoes and turnips and such, although nowadays a wide range of vegetables are eaten.
Thanks for the correction!
Did his Svið come from some kind of soup, too? I googled Svið, which looked meaty, but what he got from a take-away seemed less meaty with liquid to me...
Well, either way, very interesting! And don't worry about PETA! :)
it really just depends on the sheep, i occasionally have svið when I have the urge to live by my icelandic roots but the ones I´ve had so far aren´t very meaty
shareWow, Im familiar with "smalahovud" in norway, served at special occasions, but seeing it served as fastfood .. Man, thats just Rock`n roll. Amazing. :)
shareawesome stuff, thanks for the info. honestly, I don't think I could stomach eating an eye ( iwas once vegetarian :P ), but if someone fed it to me with my eyes closed, I'd love to try it lol :)

He pulls up at the drive-through and the girl says "The usual?" He says "Yes, I'll have a sheep's head".
My body makes no moan
But sings on:
All things remain in God.
the drive-thru looks like a mcdonalds, after the girl asked, "the usual?" and then he answered "i'll have a sheep's head". i thought he was being sarcastic!! (as in, of cos i'm having my usual of burger and fries, not going to order a sheep's head, am i!!!) when he went back to the apartment and got his pen-knife out... that's when i realised he wasn't trying to be funny. it looks very tender and meaty, abit like a lamb shank!! tasty!!
i've a feeling there's something going on between the detective and the drive-thru girl, something of a romantic nature! maybe someone who has read the novel can tell us!
No sorry nothing romantic going on between them but he does meet a woman in another book and gets involved with her
