Was anyone at all disturbed?

Even though he didn't have that amazing of a reason to break up with Bianca, Lars still wanted to break up and start seeing Margo. When Margo broke up with Erik, she even admitted to Lars that her reason for breaking up wasn't so great, but Lars still wanted Bianca to die so he could date Margo, at least that's the conclusion I came to. It seemed as Lars became closer with Margo, the worse Bianca's "health" got. Lars WANTED Bianca to die just so he could date Margo... does that make anyone uneasy to see that some people feel so restricted in a relationship that they wish their partner to die? Or did I just come up with a really negative conclusion? I loved this movie and thought it was really cute and quirky up until I realized that Lars wanted Bianca dead..

I dont think its a case of Lars WANTING Bianca dead so he can run off with another woman.

Like the doctor said, Lars' delusions about Bianca were an underlying mental issue that would end when he didnt need her anymore. He got Bianca because he didnt like being touched by people and he knew this was strange and wanted to be able to act normally around someone.

When him and Margo went bowling and he touched Margo's hand, he didnt get the same stressful feeling he did when touching everyone else, and he discovered that there were real people in the world capable of making him feel comfortable and secure. Because of this realisation, he didnt need Bianca anymore and his subconscious then began to break apart the delusion of Bianca by killing her off

Everyone seems to agree that Bianca died because he didn't need her anymore, but I have to disagree. I'm apparently the only one who thinks so, but I'm convinced that Bianca died because he needed to deal with death. The line where he talks about the fake flowers "They're not real, so they will last forever," is the most telling. The entire point of Bianca is that she can't die. That was the whole reason he had a doll for a girlfriend instead of a real human woman.

He could have gotten rid of Bianca in various ways. He could have dumped her, she could have dumped him, or he could have just forgotten about her and stopped bothering about her at all. Hell, she could have gotten a job in Figi and moved away. She had to die because his issues stemmed from guilt, shame and fear over his mother's death. He had never dealt with his parents' death, and he had never dealt with all the horrible after-effects that stemmed from his mother's death (dad became emotionally unavailable and brother ran off all because of her death).

I really don't believe that Bianca's death was his way of getting rid of her. I believe it was his way of finally coming to terms with the death of his parents, and even the possibility that his sister-in-law and other loved ones might die. In a way, grieving Bianca was how he finally grieved his mother so that he could move on with his life.

I thought nicotineprincess had some great insight. I never took the thought that far, just figured it was the natural course the situation took. Bianca had to die in order for Lars to get past his mother's and father's death, and for him to be able to face that death is the way life ends. I think your interpretation was brilliant.

I fully agree with your analysis here. I think that both aspects are correct. That he wanted to relate to something that could never die and that his delusion became less and less needed as he began to connect to living people.

I loved this movie. It's so rare for subjects such as what it is to be a man, difficulty connecting with humans, and mental illness to be treated so thoughtfully.

I find I think that it is the combination of the two. Your interpretation is much more developed that her just dying so he could move on. They killed the mother at his birth for a reason, and that is really how Bianca ties in. I found your thoughts very insightful and I agree with them.

Pretty excellent post.
I still thought the movie was awful, though.

I had figured it was a bit of both too. Being with Bianca taught him how to be with someone else, while losing her taught him how to be without someone. Before she 'died,' he was then ready to let her go. But he still had one more thing to learn from her. As the doctor says in it towards the end, everything that happened to Bianca, Lars did it, and he had to move away from her the way he did.

It is funny though, as much as the character was clearly a doll, it did cross my mind how he would deal with 'cheating' on her!

Excellent post, so glad to see your contribution--even though I am three years late.

I feel at peace reading your post. I caught that flower line too immediately as it was said. I had the same view. Usually I find no similar views as mine on imdb boards.

are you by any chance coming at this from a gender perspective? the point you're making sounds quite familiar. :)

It didn't bother me so much though, and I think nicotineprinces gives a brilliant explanation.
