Why is glorifying God an excuse for bad film making

It seems that every time someone criticizes one of Sherwood's movies, the answer is always that the movie is meant to glorify God. If anything that's a rather dis honoring statement, because God deserves the best. It's like saying it's fine for church to be boring and unexciting, as long as the message is good, not that Sherwood's movies, other than Fireproof, have very good messages anyway. Plus the fact that many movies throughout history were meant to convey messages, and because they were made so well, people remembered and appreciated them.

I suppose the people that criticize them could make a better movie?

I mean most of the people they've gotten to do these films had very little if any experience in films or acting, so if you couldn't do better, then you should be quiet about the quality of the film.

Let's just compare with other movies with small budgets and unknown casts: Following, and PI for example.

I am a born-again Christian who sincerely loves Christ and desires to follow him. I also consider myself a bit of a film buff so i thought i should put my .02 in. Yes, some of the acting isn't the best in this film, but i still think it's a pretty good movie. In fact, compared to most Christian films, it's PHENOMENAL! I hate to say that, but most Christian movies are extremely corny and amateurish. This movie made me genuinely laugh and cry. It's especially good when you realize it was made entirely by amateurs from one church AND filmed with ONE camera. The coach was the assistant pastor of the church with no acting experience (except for Flywheel, their first go-round). When you take into account what they had to work with, it's absolutely amazing that the film came out this well. The Lord had to be behind it. I know the skeptics will scoff at that last line but i firmly believe that.

And to the OP, just out of curiosity, what Christian films do you think were better than this one?

reply

I guess I don't understand what being Christian has to do with making a good film. A poorly made film is a poorly made film and this is a poorly made film. It seems like a lot of Christians will like any movie made that is labeled a Christian Film. It's the same with Christian music.

Not true. I am a Christian and there are several "Christian" films that I find to be very poorly made. And I, also, find that there are a few Christian artists out there who really should not be making cds. HOWEVER, that is just my opinion.
Again, HOWEVER, I tend to watch films that have a powerful message, not just for entertainment. Facing the Giants was indeed poorly made in quite a few, if not all, aspects. The message though was powerful. Could they have done a better job? Possibly. Again, my opinion.
And same goes for music. Just because an artist sings Christian music does not mean I am going to listen to them. The lyrics may be great, but if the music and artist is bad, then chances are I will not listen to it.

Sorry for being long winded. I tried not to be.

I don't think people who like the film are thinking in terms of production values or acting quality, but the way the film's message resonates with them. It's not going to appeal to everyone, only to those with eyes that see.

I can't criticize this movie until I make a movie myself?
I don't want to make a movie. I'm not planning on making any movies. These people did make a movie, and it is a bad movie. I have every right to criticize this movie, because all I do in my life is watch movies.

reply

Yes they may have been well made and are remembered, but do they remember why those movies were made? I believe that the Sherwood movies are absolutely correct. Just because you don't think that it is made very well, does not take away the fact that they were made to glorify God and His word, and also to show that even christians go through the same things other people do. They go through quite a bit actually. But the point of the movies is to show that no matter what the problem is, what the situation is, or whatever it is that you might be going through God will always be there to help you through as long as you accept Him and live through your faith.
