I'm with you man. This is a terrible, terrible movie, the worst horror movie I've ever seen. I want my money back! I had to play forward during many passages as I was so bored it wasn't even funny. It could've turned out a bettre sotyr had there been some effort and imagination put into it, which I'm not going to dvelop now because I'm too pissed off you can't evevn imagine.

Stay away from this film. Hell evevn teens horor movies destroy this piece if *beep* Enough said.

Well despite TheJigsaw's very wise and definative "Enough Said" about this awesome movie, it is interesting reading such wildly different opinions on the same film.

When I read a review from Slasherpool.com or Horror-Movies.ca that say it is an excellent film and see that Lionsgate is putting it out with SAW III in the U.K. and then I come here and read that it is "the worst horror movie" you've ever seen...well that is just wild.

Obviously I love the movie, but maybe it is not for everyone? Maybe what you dislike about it is what everyone else enjoys?

All I know is that I am buying it the second it comes out in the U.S.

reply

I love your sarcasm, pierre. Seriously, I'm really interested in hearing why you think it's an awesome movie.

The only "good" thing was the creepy atmosphere on certain moments in the park/roads , but other than that it had no coherence and cohesion at all; not to mention the poor acting. It reminded me of these music video-clips shown on MTV.

You may be wondering what made me rent it, right? Well, first as you said it was being put out by Lionsgate, which except for this piece of crap it hasn't disappointed me yet; secondly, I read it had been awarded several prizes in European fests.

reply

Well, like I said in my response (which I didn't intend to be sarcastic), I believe that what I enjoyed about the film may be exactly what you disliked about it.

The fact that Anne is out in the woods, and everyone she turns to for help is killed within minutes of agreeing to help her...you chalk that up to incoherence and cohesion, but I suggest that it was done on purpose. Rather than being the story of an innocent woman in the woods being hunted, this is a movie about a very perculiar sexual dance. I think the filmmakers were making very clear choices in what happened to this woman out there.

A) You know who the killer is from the opening scenes. So this is not a movie about guessing who is chasing her.

B) Anne never really tries to escape. And the odd choices she makes (leaving the cross) always seem to lead her back to the killer.

C) The killer never chases her. He simply waits for her to come to him (as when he opens the gate and simply stands there, waiting for her to join him).

D) When they do end up together, the "killer" doesn't kill Anne--he tells her that she's afraid of herself.

E) And the "climax" is staged to be a climax in more than one way.

So, this gorgeous looking and sounding movie could have been made without any thought or talent on the filmmakers part (as you seem to suggest), or perhaps it was trying to do something a little bit different and that was not what you expected or wanted. Perhaps the comaprisions to HIGH TENSION or WOLF CREEK set you up for a different movie?

I'm not saying you "should" have enjoyed it--you've certainly got the right to your opinion, but as I said before, the reasons you (and in all fairness some other viewers) have given seem in direct contrast to my personal experience and that of some respected critics.

Obviously I'm way too in love with this movie and I should probably go get help.

reply

To each their own. I can accept that.

The filmmakers may have wanted to show something different but I believe they failed at it overall. You'd still need some solid story to back up those strange situations/reactions happening, if not it all appears out of context, far fetched. Just piece put together. You need more dialogue, more character development.

Actually, I didn't know this movie was compared to the likes of Wolf Creek or High Tension (yes, I liked those); I had zero prejudices towards this film, as I usually do with films when approaching them. I tend to only read the general plot and that's it.

PS: By sarcastic I was refering to this line, not to your whole posts:

Interesting point.

I think the lack of dialog is one of the greatest things about the film--it isolates our main character in her wilderness environment, it isolates her with only her thoughts, which seems to be the main objective of her adversary. Forcing her to look at who she is, what she wants and what she's actually capable of.

I "want" to know more about the why, but don't "need" to know more. It is all right there in the movie--she hooked-up with this guy and liked how raw it was and then she ran away, afraid of her own impulses. This guy is just out there to make her follow through on her own impulse.

Again, it is interesting to read all the different reactions.

reply

well Pierre - it sure isolates me - I just wish it had isolated me from buying it. I have rarely seen such a bad film.

reply

Pierre you are not totally insane. I found the movie very enjoyable. Slow at times but by the end of the movie I understood why.

Keep giving indie horror a chance!

reply

Yeah, I gotta say... I really liked it too. Very original. Yes, many of Anne's choices seemed ridiculous, but I felt that if this were really happening she would be in a severe state of shock (seeing her boyfriend killed so suddenly and brutally right in front of her) and that she would not be capable of making rational decisions, so I went with it. I guess it's just one of those polarizing movies. Either you kinda like it or you totally hate it.

"Sex Cauldron?!? I thought they closed that place down!"

I liked it simply because it's different than your everyday slasher. I mean sure there's a girl running through the woods and all that jazz, but the whole bike thing interested me. I did notice that there wasn't much dialog in the entire movie, this isn't necessarily a bad thing when you have actors who aren't the greatest. I'm not familiar with any of the actors in the movie, so I can't say for certain, but I didn't think any of them did a horrible job.

6/10 for me.

To start I would hire the editor for any film of mine. He did a great job though the rest of the film seemed to be lacking.
The camerawork was extremely sketchy, alot of the shots were at a very annoying 45 degree "art school" angle which was more than annoying. There were several scenes in which we zoom in slightly for no reason whatsoever adding a twitch of disliking from me.
I shouldn't need to explain why the story isn't too great, however, it eats me up inside. Our female lead, Anne, is perhaps the most universally stupid character in all of film. Opting bike for car, leaving a mountain with phone service to ride wildly through the woods, yada yada yada yada. I might have enjoyed this film if I were able to completely suspend my disbelief but I didn't care enough about anything in it to do so.
Most of all, the strange reasonless and unlikely oddities. Mute foresters, stupid shotgun toting jeep driver, nearly decapitating a man with a bike chain, blood that was so meticulously cleaned up that no trace of the POOL of blood remained where it had been previously(we're in the mountains for christ sake not on a extremely cleanable surface), and every horror movie cliche that could ever inflict damage on a film who's story seemed like it could go in the right direction.
I understand that it was low budget, but some kind of score for the film would have greatly helped.

2 out of ten. I give it that purely for the editing and a smidgen for the cinematography of the final scene.

It's a bloody SURVIVAL film.

What is a survival-horror film? One person or a group of people RUNNING AWAY from a person or a group of people threatening their life.

What do you expect? They suddenly take a break and decide to have some tea while having a conversation about each other's intentions?

Good point TheJigsaw.

I liked this one too, I can see why some of her decisions would annoy people though.

I think the reason she ran away from the cross was because she probably thought your man was watchin here since he had hauled her dead boyfriend all the way up there and was aware of the place and she was freaked out completely by seeing him there.

As for choosing bike over car that isn't that unusual for someone so comfortable on a bike, it really seemed like a second home to her right from the start of the film. Plus on a mountain, a bike is going to have a better chance of getting through the terrain than a car. The part where she takes the bike off the jeep and goes the opposite way to find the cross was also prob a *beep* you to your man, instead of going through the gate after he opened it. By the end it makes more sense since she was so determined to survive and defeat him. All in all not a bad film even if it was a bit slow in parts and some of the acting was a bit dodgy.

I really liked it. It was big on atmosphere and the violence was actually put in context of the story, contrary to many horror movies nowadays. It was not perfect - there were some inconsistencies in the screenplay and some of the main character's actions were not on the smart side - but it was well made. The two leads were great, the locations were fantastic and I loved the subdued cinematography. I gave it 7/10.
