Question about the game

I am not far into the game but am having touble. Every time I try and spread my fleet across several planets, the empire attacks one of them and either I barely survive or I lose that planet. If I do survive, another empire fleet comes by soon after and they completely annihilate me. If I keep all my ships over one planet, I can never spread out. I keep starting over and trying different strategies but I seem to always end up with 4 planets until the empire forces me to slowly go back down to 1. If anyone has any tips on how to spread my ships out successfully that would be greatly appreciated. The part of the game I am stuck at is right before the Kashyyk mission with Han, when they suggest conquering more planets before continuing with additional missions.

I did some things before the Empire could engage my forces. The very first missions I built as many space units as I could without having to cut down on essential ground forces. Then when the next stage came along I built as much as I could again and tried to conquer every planet accessible (of course this isn't allways possible in certain stages). Then see where the Empire is most likely going to approach your systems and take the bulk of your fleet there.

Also, much depends on your skills as a tactical commander. Allways let the fighters and patrol cruisers (anti-fighter platforms) engage the fighers and bombers. I usually let the fighters tackle the enemy fighters and the patrol cruisers (or the Corellian patrol cruisers) shoot down the enemy bombers. The bombers and bigger capital ships engage the enemy ships and Space base. I usually engage the anti-fighter ships first with my ships and then engage the other ships with bombers and so on. Depending on how important the defeat of the enemy space base is to you (or the game) I would suggest taking out the bulk of enemy ships before sending the bombers to take out the critical hardpoints.

When it comes down to hardpoints I usually target (with the bombers) the launchbay, if present, then the shields and then go for the ion cannons and lastly the lasers. Torpedo launchers are about the same importance as the ion cannons since they can penetrate shields AND cause damage. But they aren't many and have a slow rate of fire so I would say the ion cannon banks are more important but then the torpedoes comes close second. Also U should value your fighters, espescially if you are rebel. So take out the enemy laser cannons, NOT the turbolasers, first. Then proceed to target the turbolasers.

Lastly, U should be aware that sending everything into the fray is foolhardy and just a great waste of your valuable forces. Since the fighters usually are first to combat anything I would suggest you send your patrol cruisers in with fighters as close backup. When U get ahold of the situation and know where the enemy assets are you can begin planning and placing your bombers and heavy ships at strategic starting points for their runs and attack vectors.

Lastly, again, when it comes to the space artillery. Think of fighters as infantry and enemy hardpoints, be they on ships or the space base, as buildings. Don't really bother with fast moving targets like patrol cruisers. Fighters are fast, yes but they tend to group up and be easily destroyed in large numbers. Just be sure to let something durable (like a frigate) draw the enemy fighters' attention (i.e. circle around their target) then lay a devastating barrage of torpedoes. It is more efficient if U have multiple artillery ships then one lone piece. Have 2 to rain holy terror on their sorry asses. I usually let the ships dish it out agains eachother and let the artillery soften up the enemy space base, in the same order I would tell the bombers. Artillery vs. artillery isn't a good kind of battle. It can be hard to know that you are being fired upon with long range torpedoes and you don't really dish out critical damage. If artillery fire on your artillry is detected the move it away somewhere safer and blow up the enemy piece (since it has given away its position you can find it)

Thanks for reading. Know that this advice is for single player only. Different strategies must be deviced when facing an intelligent opponent (i.e. human) lol. :):P;)

Thanks for the reply fred. That's a lot of advice. I'll try to use as much as I can the next time I restart the game.
