Beat your woman every morning...

...if you don't know why, she does.

What about that time I found you naked with that bowl of Jell-O?

reply

I thought that was cute,as did my wife (surprisingly). Not to be taken serious of course,so please don't bombard this with anti-wife beating posts. My wife and I are both against wife beating for the record...jeff

Ehehe that was funny and it makes sense.

reply

I thought it was a horrendous line and one that should have been consigned to the cutting room floor.
Every two days is more than enough.............. ;-)

reply

Hhhmmm. Once a day and twice on Sundays... Should do the trick. :) I'm going to hell!!

It's when Gyllenhaal goes to appeal for them to release the prisoner, and it is referring to them beating this man for information.

reply

I agree.

And Jake's reaction added to the subtle humor.

"... I don't know what that means."

reply

I'm sure women in north africa and the middle east find it really funny also...

reply

Yeah because only women in north africa and the middle east suffer domestic abuse..

reply

Na..they just accept it. It's their way of life.

Yeah, I guess it would take just one time getting beaten to not think it was funny. But wait, I've never been beaten and yet I didn't find it the least bit humorous. It was said to make a point, that the guy saying it was a sadistic creep. Enough said...

reply

I didnt think it was just about sadism. I thought it referred to the subject feeling guilty about something that torture may bring out confessions that you were not expecting. Call it speculative torture "if you dont know why, she/he will".
This is an effective interview technique. Leave the subject alone to worry about why they are there, what the interviewer knows about them and then ask "do you know whay you are here?" Works more times than not.

I hope that in the past 6 years u got a chance to learn more about islam. Only ignorant people beat their wives! Nothing related to islam.

reply

Jake's reaction shows how politically correct he is, that he would never even consider thinking about such a thing. Or how maybe dumb he really is. But I think the writers mean the former.

reply

Saying all "Religious Muslims" agree with beating a wife is so ignorant and wrong it's not even funny. And I took it as Jake's character knew what the phrase meant, but would not acknowledge its application to the situation.

"The world will look up and shout, 'Save us!' And I'll whisper, 'Shut up world.'"

U.S. health officials report, about a quarter of U.S. women suffer domestic violence. That is pretty freaking high and that's only those that are reported.

reply

A quarter? That high? That means one in every four american women..somehow I find that very hard to believe.

Jake made it funny.

reply

I refuse to believe its that low- when i worked in social services, i quickly found out that close to 50% of women suffer direct physical or sexual abuse at the hands of a man during their lives.

reply

I wonder why that is too, not all men R bad, but makes U wonder what's going on here. Oh yeah, my spellchecker is not working right, so Hildovar check my work 4 me please so I can get that gold star daddy.

reply

Do you really? I was in a marriage for sixteen years, abused in every way possible, and NO, I never reported it. But that marriage was in the time when everyone looked away, even my own family. I tried to get help, and was punished for it. Whatever you see in movies where a woman is abused, they never show the truth, they never go far enough, they are never ugly enough regarding the violence and how it affects the woman. At least, I have never seen an accurate depiction. One-quarter of the women in the US? I was surprised it is so low the first time i heard the stastic. But that included one-time incidents as well as long-term abuse.

Today if a man even raised a hand towards me I would kill him. I have a concealed-weapons permit, carry a gun, and right or wrong I don't care. That will never happen to me again.

reply

Excellent quote, probably best thing in the movie. Its funny and it tells about dynamics of bulling. Its not that bullies know their victims weaknesses but the act of bullying causes them to reveal the weakness.

reply

Gee I wish I knew that when I was in school but the art of schooling is bullying itself but learning is yearning.

reply

I wonder if that is a real Islamic or Arabic proverb. I do know that that kind of things happens all the time in Islamic nations like Afghanistan and Iraq.

reply

no it is not islamic, i am muslim woman and we all know that beating someone is a big sin. especially in islam, a husband have to be nice his wife. they have got some claim on eachother. islam refuce the violence exactly. that dialog is a game again on muslim people. the media and hollywood are trying show us like that because they (especially zionist) hate us.

reply
