The name 'Kay'

Why was the femme fatale named "Kay?" It's such an ugly, old lady name. Just sayin.'

reply

Because it's set in the late 40's.

reply

What, then "Kays" were considered hot numbers? Nah. It's always been an old lady name.

reply

Those "old ladies" had to be young at some point, right????

reply

Sure. But it's weird. It's like naming a baby Esther or something.

reply

IMO, not that weird, those are just names that were popular back then, in an age where most of those women are now older ladies. Like any thing else in life, it goes in cycles.

reply

I don't know about that, I don't think Kay or Esther has ever been a popular name. BTW. Guess what my name is, lol.

reply

male or female?

reply

Female.

reply

I don't know, is it Rachel??

reply

I have two aunts - one on each side of the family - named Kay. And I don't have a big family. Yes, it was a popular name - especially in the south in that time period. One's name is actually Kay, the other's was Katharine but called Kay, so for the time this movie was set, yes, it was an appropriate and popular name and fit with the character and plot for that era.

reply

That's funny. I was named after my Aunt Kay, who's actual name was Katharine! But I didn't have the luxury of being named Katherine, which you could take several nicknames from. I am just plain old Kay.

I've always hated the name, it sounds very old-fashioned and I dunno...dorky.

reply

I have two cousins named Kay, born in that period. It was a popular name.

reply

Um, my name is Kay. I didn't realize it was such an ugly, old fashioned name.

reply

I like it, haters gonna hate

reply

The cool thing about a name like this is I rarely run into someone with the same name. My parents gave me one 3 letter name and no middle name, so that's all I have to go by. When people are surprised I don't have but one little name, I joke and tell them we were so poor we couldn't afford but one name.

reply

I don't think Kay is an old name. I always think of Kay as being a nickname for Katherine. To me Pat sounds just as old. But it is also a nickname for Patricia. Names like Esther, Bertha, Stella, Hattie & Mabel sound old to me. Some of those are the names of celeb's children. lol

reply

Yeah, I had a great aunt Mabel and knew multiple old ladies named Esther back in the day.

And I guess there's always the definition of "old." I was born in 1958, and that may sound old to some people. But if you live long enough you will be 53 at some point in your life and even older. It's really not old. I don't feel any different than I did at 20, except I have more sense now.

Think hard before naming your children. They're going to be stuck with the names you give them all their lives unless they choose to change them. I gave my kids names they could use variations of if they choose to, but they are decent names that never go out of style.

reply

I think alot of people/celebs are giving their kids names that will stand out. It's sad that those parents don't realize it's their kids who should stand out, not their names. Dweezil, Blanket, Free, Jermajesty, Pilot & on & on.
