Betty Draper Francis's Nightgowns

She always had the most beautiful night clothes. I never saw her in the same sleepwear set twice. I can remember seeing some of those nightgowns back in the day and find it amazing that the costumer was able to find them. Women do not sleep in such finery and frills in this day and age.

Yes, and she has the figure, and they give her the foundation wear, to pull off all those fabulous looks. I was surprised at how form fitting many of the fashions were, even many of Peggy's dresses in season 2. And their shoes, and those hats! And hairstyles.

"they give her the foundation wear, to pull off all those fabulous looks."

There was an episode in Season 7, Joan was in L.A. in a hotel, she's asleep in bed, phone rings, she wakes up, she's sleeping with her bra on...

Why would it offend you that women don't sleep in frills?

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

It doesn't offend me Moonlightly. Sorry that I gave you that impression. I sleep in a tee shirt and pj bottoms. I've just noticed that ladies don't dress for bed like they used to when I was growing up. We all have different levels of comfort for sleeping and to each their own. I'd love to have some of the pretties that Betty Draper slept in.

Be well and be kind

Maybe it is because back then a woman was a house wife and part of her "job" was being the woman of the house. Now women typically have a job and come home do stuff around the house so frilly night gowns are a bit much I guess.

My wife is beautiful and can definitely pull off lingerie but she works hard I work hard and most nights we are content with curling up and reading a book and hanging out together. On occasion we both put on the glam (except not much you can do with me)

I would MUCH rather have my amazing wife and partner who wears her cozy PJs and our 16 yr marriage than Betty and Don with all the frilly stuff.

I realize times were different then and this is probably not a great example of the norm of the 60s but man he is so scuzzy not sure I could live with myself doing what he did. I get a bit depressed thinking about being a man like that.

I liked the one in season 2 or 3 that had a matching peignoir and a couple episodes later Sally is wearing a child-appropriate-style nightgown in the same fabric.

reply

Unless you're Carmella Soprano! She had a different beautiful gown or satin pj's, each with a matching robe. I'm always jealous of her nightwear, because I share a chest drawer of big, baggy t-shirts with my husband for night shirts. Sigh.....

I enjoyed seeing Betty's bed clothes as well. She did pull out her flannel gowns and other plain nightwear when she and Don were on the outs, though!

Many of them were probably custom made for her. I read that all of Joan's dresses were custom made.

They were pretty but looked scratchy and uncomfortable.
