I like Peggy until......

Season 7:2 "A days work" when she took the secretary's flowers by mistake. Upon finding out it wasn't hers she was humiliated she told Joan to get rid of the secretary. I agree the secretary could've tried harder to tell her the truth but, I don't think she was being malicious, nor did she deserve to be fired or moved around. (Not sure as yet what the outcome of her position is as yet)

Thoughts?

I still love my girl Peggy. You have to understand how upset she still was over Ted, and thinking that he sent her the flowers sent all of her reason and logic out the window. She was a pain in the a$$, though. I felt bad for Shirley.

I think that had to be the low point in Peggy's story arc, definitely. Hey, Don Draper was her mentor so she can use that in her own defense.

Life is always intense for a repo man.

reply

Oh come on now. Don is (rightly or wrongly) blamed or credited with a lot of stuff in the series, but this goes to the level of straight-up catty bitch. The person most skilled in that sort of thing over the course of the series was undoubtedly Joan.

reply

I was only kidding about Don there, seems he bears a lot of the blame for everything in the show lol. Although, I did not like Don's behavior at the office whenever he was in personal crisis and Peggy's reaction did remind me of that a bit.

Actually, Peggy did imitate much of Don's behavior whenever she was in charge. She upbraided his secretary for speculating on Don's whereabouts and later, at CGC, she rode her underlings even worse than Don did.

The exception was when, for a short time, she became Don's boss. She could not bring herself to speak sharply to him.

I never like the Peggy/Ted coupling. It really did bring out the worst in her.

Maggie,

I am not sure the Ted interlude there was her worst moment, but it was really up there. I kind of thought the whole thing was partly her sorting out her relationship with Don given Don's complicated relationship with Ted. Not that I think it's ever clear what that involved, meaning the sorting out part. Peggy definitely knew Don would find it, well, complicated for her to get involved with Ted.

Not that Ted was the only questionable choice she made in relationships, and perhaps the one with Duck was even worse. But for the Ted v. Don thing, it probably was.

I didn't like Peggy much from season 2 when she was all uppity and self righteous to Lois. "Lois, do you know where Mr. Draper is"?

I also didn't like her at the end of season 1 when she treated the Relaxicisor voiceover girl so cruelly.

Peggy indulged in various forms of bitchery throughout the series, but these are two early examples that made me dislike her.

reply

Yes, Peggy was harsh with Lois, but she was really doing Don and Lois a favor. As Don's former secretary, she knew that Lois needed to cover for him when he was not in his office. Also, it was a lesson that all good secretaries need to learn.

Peggy was a jerk regardless. She could have been a little nicer to the underlings....after all she was nothing but a secretary until she was discovered.

reply

Do you think Don and Pete and Roger, etc. should have been nicer to their underlings? Because there were multiple times they weren't so nice. If Peggy is trying to make it in a market not generally populated by a lot of women, she's only going to get anywhere by acting as tough as the men.
