Spin-off version ideas?

This show took place 1960-1970, could it work for another decade with a new cast? Which decade would you pick, who would be your Don Draper? Or material-wise was the 60's just too damn good?

I think the 70's or 80's could work quite well for a Mad Man style show. But it doesn't have to be connected to Mad Men to be good.

Sally in the 1970:.

I could definitely see a "Mad Women" series happening right about now....but some women might find the title offensive. haha

I just posted on this topic. Don Draper as a Werner Erhardt type personal development guru. Perfect timing in the historical timeline of Mad Men.

I think the 1970s has potential but I don't think I would tie it to Mad Men. I would use the same idea of a cast of characters that work with each other and are intertwined in interesting ways. I would set it in a different business world than advertising though, perhaps the world of music that could bring in record producers, night clubs, television dance shows... That would be an interesting arc from folk and acid rock through heavy metal, disco, punk and New Wave. Lots of fodder for stories, from race relations and AIDS to the economy, poliitics, technology... Maybe nod to Mad Men by mentioning hiring Sterling Cooper Draper Price for some campaign in the first episode...

That show kind of exists and it's called "Vinyl" on HBO.

It had a pretty overrated first season, though.

Never seen it... Oh well (thought it sounded like a good idea)

Given that "Vinyl" isn't pulling it off particularly well, it's STILL a good idea. ;-)

I tried it, but it bored me to tears.

Same.

A good friend of mine worked on the show and we had a very long discussion about how inexplicably boring the show is. He totally agrees.

I wanted to like the show, but it bored me too. I couldn't finish the first episode. It was the same thing with Boardwalk Empire, also from Terrence Winter. It was an interesting idea, but it didn't hook me at all. For me, there was a feeling that there was something lacking there.

Anyway, I really hope HBO nails a good drama soon.

For what it's worth, if you can get through the first 2 episodes of Boardwalk Empire, it gets much, much better. I agree that it was tough sledding getting into, though. I had to start and re-start the pilot multiple times before finally pushing through. "Vinyl" was a mess, though. There will be a second season, but Terrence Winter is no longer running the show and production is substantially delayed while they re-group.

reply

I don't remember how many episodes of Boardwalk Empire I watched, but it was definitely more than one. With the exception of the female lead, the other characters didn't hook me. I felt there was something lacking.

And HBO is kind of a mess right now. Their new drama Westworld and David Fincher's new show were also delayed. The second season of The Leftovers was also delayed for creative reasons. There are no words on True Detective season 3 because season 2 was a mess because they rushed things. They're not getting anything right with dramas lately. Game of Thrones is the only thing they have.

I was just about to suggest that.

It had a pretty hyped only season.

The ratings sucked, so no second season.

I know. Language: how inconvenient.

With the same cast, I would love to see Sally's story. Will she end up coking up the 80s like Forrest Gump's Jenny? Sally had alcohol problems as a child, so she could end up with alcohol or drug dependency, and how would that play out? Or will she get more care-takey like an Al-Anon/co-dependent (or both)? Will she end up as a responsible adult, or fulfill her "demon child," never-admit-what-you've-done tendencies? I am hoping for a strongly-written vehicle for "the divine Miss Shipka."

Pick up with Don in the 1980s!

Harry Crane in the mid 70s as a TV producer, having moved from ads to TV production. Lots of cocaine, sitcoms getting edgy, Watergate, etc. This way you don't have to go back to Don Drapper and see his fate, I think it might be better to leave him unanswered.
