Which shows are similar?

I just started Mad Men and I'm already hooked! I recently finished Stranger Things, The Crown, House of Cards, The Sopranos, and Six Feet Under prior to this. I know, I know..I'm a little behind on my HBO hit shows! What are some shows you'd recommend to watch next that are similar to Mad Men in terms of slow burn?

reply

The Wire. Have you seen it? Not similar to Mad Men at all, but it's a slow burn kind of show and universally acclaimed as one of the best TV shows. It requires patience at the begginging, but it's totally worth it. I tried three times before actually getting hooked. I don't regret it at all. But, unlike Mad Men, The Wire is more a "social study" than "psychological study". The characters are great anyway.

The Americans is another slow burn kind of show and also highly acclaimed. It gets better and better every season. Especially after the third one.

Apparently you have a taste similar to mine. What are your thoughts on The Crown? I haven't seen it and wasn't quite interested, but apparently it's really good.

The Crown is really good. Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, Orange is The New Black, the first three seasons of Homeland. I love period dramas too.

YOUR VOTE MATTERS! Please vote in every election. Thank you.

I haven't seen Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife. Orange is The New Black is one of the most enjoyable shows I watch. Homeland I saw just the first two seasons and gave up.

I haven't heard of Call the Midwife! I'll check Orange is the New Black!

The Crown is beautifully done. When Queen Elizabeth is in Kenya among giraffes, you really believe she's there. They spared no expense. Claire Foy is such a revelation in the part, you can't take your eyes off her. Cons are I wanted even more of Winston Churchhill (John Lithgow). Matthew Smith hasn't won me over as Philip, acting is a bit wooden. It's more beautiful than it is riveting. Still, with just 10 episodes so far, it's more than worth watching.

I've tried twice to get into The Wire since I have the HBO app and I've watched 2 episodes of Game of Thrones. I'll try again! I similarly tried to get into Shameless, but it didn't look like the sophisticated shows I like based on the first scene. I haven't tried This Is Us, I don't typically love period shows so I didn't try Downtown Abbey. I have Showtime, but haven't started Homeland. I want to try Narcos, but feel like I should start with The Wire...

Great. I heard that The Crown is the most expensive Netflix show. And they already shot the second season, which is cool. What about character study? Is it good?

I think The Wire is very confusing at the begginnig. There are so many characters and story. I felt really lost. And I hated the characters. But then, after the second half of the season things start to make sense, merge, fit... and when the season is over, I was like "Wow, that was amazing". It really takes time to know and root for those characters, but when you do...

Shameless is one of my favorite shows, but not the best. It's definitely not sophisticated at all, and it's not their intention. Shameless is crazy, dark, messy and nonsense, but I love the characters and IMO its the best comedy in terms of delivering psychological complexity. Shameless is about nurture vs nature thing. It's about what one generation will learn or exhibit from the past generation, it's about patterns of behavior and relationship and how those issues goes back to your childhood and the relationship with you parents/caretakers. It's about coming of age, about defining and redefining identities. About surviving when you come from such a social economic situation. If you can get pass season 1, which is just a comedy and basically a copy of its original version, you'll love the show because the character study starts around season 2 when the show develops its own identiy, diverging from the british version.

The character study isn't quite what I was hoping for yet in The Crown. Hopefully, it will get better. I'm a little nervous about an older Queen Elizabeth II, but we'll see. It's worth at least checking out.

I'll definitely start The Wire. Having just finished The Sopranos, I needed a mini break from violence :) I'll check out Shameless, I really enjoyed season 1 of Six Feet Under with the dark comedy, so maybe it will be similar sans the circa 2000 massages, yoga, and hanging at bookstores vibe.

Halt And Catch Fire

Boardwalk Empire also sometimes tried to get the Mad Men mood, but rarely succeeded imo. There was this one episode, "Sunday Best" I think, where they got it right.
