Which was the worst season?

I think the final season was the worst.
It lacked the intensity of the other seasons.
The characters were less intense, as if they'd lost motivation somewhat.
The events were less interesting, even the cancer didn't seem as big as earlier events.
I think the earlier seasons did a great job of making seemingly minor events into epic moments.
It was like someone different was directing the final season, or maybe they just lost their passion.
Also I think there were too many characters in the final season, so there was less screen time to focus on what/who mattered most.

i'm on epidode 2 of season 6 and it's very blah, i can already see what you're referring to in this season
i don't like any of the new characters and don feels like a completely different (boring) person
the storylines are also kind of...stale
i know it's early but so far i'm going to have to go w/ season 6, unless megan and sylvia miraculously kill each other off in the season finale

I agree, expanding the cast really diluted the quality, because the new characters were very dull and wasting screen time. And yes, Don is relatively hollow in the final season.
I was really surprised by the change, because my other favorite shows had really good final seasons that I didn't want to end.
And its ironic that they ran out of interesting stories, because you'd think they'd have very interesting stories now that Don is more of a free bird.
But it turns out Don is a lot more interesting when he's doing his job.

Just because you didn't find the story interesting and for the most part didn't like the change doesn't mean that the writers ran out of interesting stories. They had one to tell but you just happened to not like it.

The one in which Megan had a big role.
