Comedy Central failures ...

Its wierd that watching 30 minutes of seinfeld reruns can make me laugh more than the average 30 minutes of Comedy Central shows. The Naked Trucker and T-Bones show is another piece on CC's pile of crap.

In fact, over the past 5 years, I can only think of a handful of shows that I thought were worth watching.

These are things I've enjoyed watching:

- Insomniac with Dave Attel
- South Park
- The Daily Show
- The Colbert Report
- The Chappelle Show

And that about does it. The only other thing they had going was old 1990's Saturday Night Live, Kids in the Hall, and Brittish Whose Line reruns. MadTV is funny occaisionally.

Other than that, thousands of airings of 'Cheech and Chong', 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,' and 'Half Baked' tend to get old. I will only watch Comedy Central in the 10:00-12:00 ET window.

Feel free to add your own Comedy Central crap shows:

- Crank Yankers
- Mind of Mencia

reply

-Strangers with Candy
-that one show with the 3 guys (michael ian black i believe was one of them) whose name i won't even give the respect to look up. i think it had a woman's name in it.
-Strip Mall
-Freaks (or whatever that cartoon's called)

as for other shows i've admittedly enjoyed:
-Drawn Together (has some good daring comedic moments)
-The Man Show (i've been a fan of adam corolla's since love lines, but crank yankers was definitely a one trick pony.)

reply

_Con
_mind of mencia (sorry I dont care how many people like it , hes just not that funny)
__stella
_upright citezens brigade
_viva variety
_distraction
_thats my bush

god i cant even think anymore

If you thought UCB and Stella were bad you fail at life.

reply

UCB was good but stella sucked.

WHOA, therewasaMANKISS, that's some insane list! I guess there was quite a stretch when I just never watched Comedy Central. Seriously, I think the CEO needs to wear that list around his neck like a freaking albatross!

Let's Bowl was great. I remember that show very fondly.
MST3k was great show they cancelled WAY back in the day.
Mind of Mencia makes me wanna smoke crack.
As for Naked Trucker and T-Bones, well I thought this show was going to be funny...I really did. But watching it hurts. Bad. I wish it could have lived to potential.

reply

What about the Vacant Lot?

reply

How bout the Cartoon "Kid Nototrious starring that director, ugh it was brutal, can;t for get Tough Crowd with Colin Quin, possibly one of the best shows ever

reply

I vaguely remember the Vacant Lot. But I remember it being funny.

Bingo. We've watched these shows quite a lot in our house, so we've also been subjected to dozens of C.C.'s new show promos. We have informal bets on how few weeks they'll last and it seems like maybe 6 weeks is a "good" run? For the endless overload of hype on their promos (playing the same 1 or 2 clips over and over and over and over), as well as the time and money in development, they really never pay off. It seems as though people in the business of funny don't know funny and thus apparently not business either. I'd add 'Reno 911's early days and 'The Man Show' to the list before it was cancelled and resurrected with those two abrasive idiots.
Failures :
Halfway Home - I've seen better charcter acting at barbecues.
Drawn Together - OK when it parodies other cartoons, but otherwise "Look at us, we're offensive, are'nt we?"
The Naked Trucker - T-Bones took his cue from the ludicrous stereotypes of 'Deliverance' and failed miserably.
I'm With Busey - What the *&$# was that?
Mind of Mencia - Dut, duh, dut! You're not Dave Chapelle.
Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn - less bigoted than Mencia, maybe?
Freak Show - can't even live up to its own name
Distraction - funny comedian if you catch his stand up
Win Ben Stein's Money - Anybody? Anyone? Bueller? The answer is laughter is what was missing from the show 'Ben Stein's Money'.
Man Show reincarnation - an unhappy professional porn reviewer & gross-out host
South Park's last couple of years - Gross out does not equal gross-out humor.
MadTV reruns - With so many shows, each with so many sketches, why don't many stand out?
Stella - Dry humor only requires two ingredients. They were dry.
Crank Yankers - How much barf can one puppet hold? Have they been waterboarded?
Blue Collar TV - They should stick to short story telling.
Con - A guy trying to con his way into free this and that because C.C. won't budget enough to get him out of the soup kitchen.
Original Movies - Porn 'n Chicken - good title, though

For some reason Comedy Central picks up these shows that when you hear about it your ask yourself "Why the hell was this concept even made into a show and what was the creator smoking when he conceived it?" And a lot of the time you hear about these unlikely shows being successes but when Comedy Central does it....THEY DO SUCK!(ie The Naked Trucker and T Bones). But anyway, worst CC shows in my view are:

Naked Trucker and T Bones
Con
I'm With Busey
Crank Yankers
& 3, 4 seasons of Reno 911!

And I can't figure out what everyone hates about Carlos Mencia, I've been known to laugh my butt off while watching this show, and he even uses common sens (Dee De DEE!).

He steals a lot of his material, and his entire routine relies upon some form of shock value. If you DON'T think it's funny, he also provides you with the reason: you're just too PC!

I mean, come on, how can you find that horrid "dee dee dee!" thing funny?

reply

That unfunny hack Carlos is always saying "Us Mexicans this, us Mexicans that" and he isn't even Mexican. He is from South America. Insomiac was great. Dave Attel is very funny.

"O-QUA TANGIN WANN" Riley Martin

reply

Add Lil' Bush to the list. In the 10 years that I've had CC this has got to be the worst abomination that they have allowed on the air. As bad as Kid Notorious, Naked Trucker, and The Sarah Silverman (HOW IS THAT WOMAN FAMOUS?!) Show are they have absolutely nothing on this pile of steaming crap.

reply

Its funny they've tried hard to come up with a ton of shows, and one thing you can say about comedy central is theres no way you could blame a show failing because they "never promoted it."

The Great Shows for Me:

Colbert Report-Still Rocking

The Daily Show-Not as great as it once was, but still hilarious at times

South Park-New ones aren't always funny but certain new ones have been golden

Scrubs reruns-Amazing show, fell in love with it on CC and had never watched before.

Chappelle's Show-Great, but I'm never going to watch it again, sick of seeing the same episodes

Good Shows:
Mind of Mencia-A copy? Sorta and yes he is an idiot himself when he says things like you just don't laugh cuz you're too PC when some things just aren't funny, but the show does have very funny moments

Sarah Silverman Program-Too much toilet humor but still has its moments

Drawn Together-Over the top offensive is annoying, and episodes always end in kill so and so like Supernanny or Veggie Tales, etc. Also has its funny moment and references

Stella-Great shorts, never would have worked on CC's censoring, came out only ok, they needed HBO or something

Dog Bites Man-Hilarious, made me laugh a lot, just not one of my top ones, but I knew this was going down the drain.

Reno 911-Not as funny as it started out but still got some laughs

Insomniac-A show for me I would never turn on to watch but once it was on I'd love it

Tough Crowd-Enjoyable poking fun at each other and at issues mixed with real discussions and opinions, good time

Win Ben Stein's Money-Jimmy Kimmel didn't let it get too serious, great writing for the funny categories.

Crank Yankers-On and off funny, some skits completely bust while others are very amusing.

The Man Show-Adam and Jimmy hit their stride and all the episodes entertained, Doug and Joe HORRIBLE

Strangers with Candy-Very funny parts not always a hilarious show

Distraction-Funny comedian, but not enough behind the premise to keep it going on CC

Mad TV reruns-Sometimes funny, mixed in with a lot of bad sketches

I'm With Busey-I couldn't help watching this show in amazement even though it should have been garbage. Some moments very funny.

Halfway Home-Nothing spectacular, but I have laughed some watching it.

Upright Citizen's Brigade-Again an off and on show for me, some episodes didn't work at all, some brilliantly all came together.

Battlebots-For its time period, great show, but never should be brought back.

Trigger Happy TV-I always found myself laughing at great stuff like the large cell phone guy, the sad penguin, the sex bunnies etc.

And now for the Garbage:
Naked Trucker and T Bones Show-Oh god...
Blue Collar TV-Never understood the appeal
Con-I'm happy for the guy he got his own show after winning two gameshows Whammy and Dog Eats Dog and now hes in movies and stuff (Skyler Stone) but this show was overall crap
Wanda Does It-What the hell was this???
That's My Bush-Wanted to love it, really
Lil Bush-About 6 years too late to be funny
Freak Show-Really unfunny
Beat the Geeks-Fun sometimes, overall boring
Dr. Katz-Maybe I was too young when I saw this show to "get it" so I shouldn't really judge
Make Me Laugh-Show thats novelty wore off quick
Don't Forget Your Toothbrush-NOTHING compared to the English version, NOTHING
Crossballs-The faking it doesn't usually come across very well and usually didn't upset the guests, which made this pretty unfunny of a show.

And at least one show that was forgotten that I would put in the middle category, So Graham Norton-Funny, usually dirty, did very unique things

Thats probably all I remember or saw. That was fun.

reply

two things

one. con was alright. and skyler stone is getting out there because of con and velcro, his comedy troupe. he just finished a movie with danny devito, was in that christopher guest movie, waiting, and few others. he also just signed for a show on fox, which has about a good of streak cancelling shows as CC

two.mencia is a bitch. all he is, is a substitute because dave chappelle quit.

And we will send you to whatever God you wish.. =BOONDOCK SAINT #1=

reply

I pretty much agree with people on failures.

MadTV:
I still can't believe they could trade classic SNL for MadTV. MadTV is so ridiculously unfunny. Every sketch is either based on a returning character in the same comedic scenario that has been tired and played out for years (Miss Swan, Stewart), or a poop joke that they somehow stretch out into 3 minutes.

Mind of Mencia:
Carlos Mencia's original standup was fantastic. His CC Presents is still one of my favorites because a lot of the things he talks about are funny, hard-hitting, and true. Mind of Mencia however, is an abomination. He's been trying to stretch out that first CC Presents for what, 4 or 5 seasons now? It's getting old. Not only that, I can't believe that all the play between him and the audience is just random people who came to see the show. Maybe I'm wrong, but to me it seems way too staged. Dave Chappelle had a niche for the racial humor, but it's one that it seems no one else has.

Those are the main two I have a problem with. Show's like Naked Trucker, Stella, Sarah Silverman, Lil' Bush...when I see the first commercial, the first thing always pops in my head is "Well that's gonna fail. Good job CC." I do at least give the show a watch first, at least once. So far, I haven't felt wrong.

reply

"And I can't figure out what everyone hates about Carlos Mencia, I've been known to laugh my butt off while watching this show, and he even uses common sens (Dee De DEE!)."

- I didnt have such a problem until he directly ripped off a bit from Bill Cosby. sure he changed the joke a little but it was still the same joke (youtube it if you want) he is funny at times but i no longer feel compelled to stay up or tape his shows to watch the next day, he rips off way too much and uses race for all his jokes, what he is doing is simply making observations, with prejudice as a additive.

STELLA is perhaps the greatest show outside of chappelle's, and South Park that i have seen on CC (i believe that the Colbert report and The Daily show are obvious good shows that dont need to be stated, but im stating them anyway so you wont get pissed at me for having seemingly left them out) the group, is hilarious and their show was equally hilarious, they are completely random and utilized my favorite type of comedy taking jokes and or situations til they barely make sense while at the same time keeping it funny.

And the guy who said scrubs was horrible has obviously not seen anything from season 3 on ( the first 2 seasons were great but are nothing compared to when the show finally started to flow (in my opinion S3 on)) and its also not a CC original, NBC in association w/ ABC studios.

And CC didnt willingly give up SNL, E! entertainment bought the rights to the re-runs, and CC tried to fill the lack of a sketch comedy show, and sadly there is no other sketch comedy on the level of SNL so they got the closest thing to it MadTV- a huge downgrade but not terrible.

And with most of the crap shows featuring comedians, why doesnt Daniel Tosh try pitching a pilot to CC instead of one of the local broadcastors, if CC picks up some of the crap they do surely they'll pick up something from this genius. (you might have seen his special Completely serious- this guy is freaking hilarious)
