They really should have just centered on Durotan and Draka. Why did their home collapse? The building of the gate. Guldan being scary, etc. etc. The ending of the film should have been everyone traveling through the gate with their reaction to the new world. A world that is still alive.
That's the tie-in novel "Warcraft: Durotan", it basically answers your questions ^^
Second film could have then given more time to Medivh, Khadgard and the rest.
The "Bonds of Brotherhood" comic, minus Khadgar.
Now, I'm not defending the film, it's my firm belief that this should have been envisionned as trilogy comprised of the following parts: A movie based on the story of the Durotan book, a movie based on Bonds of Brotherhood and finally the current movie.
I don't like it when films are so brutally cut and edited into oblivion like Warcraft that these tie-ins become necessary to understand the story. It shouldn't be like that.
You don't need to read the "Star Wars: Bloodlines" book to understand Force Awakens, it gives you additional fluff but it's not essential. That's how it should have been.
