Warcraft in top 10 movie iTunes download this week

You can see this for yourself here:

I don't know what this means but this is based on the downloads from the US iStore. It may drop down next week though. So, though the movie didn't do to well in cinemas in the US, it now looks like Americans are instead watching it on their iPads.

One more thing, since the HD Digital version was released on Tuesday, the Warcraft Blu_ray pre-orders on Amazon seems to of surged. Whereas only on Monday, the sales rank of the movie on amazon.com was at number 30 in the Movies and TV category, then next day it jumped to the top 10. I don't know what this means for the DVD/Blu-Ray release in 2 weeks time though. I'm wondering if it will break even once the home video market is taken into account.

It's encouraging news.

Interesting, when I first wrote that, it didn't look like it was selling well in the Microsoft store even though it was listed as one of the top movie downloads on iTunes store. Now, the movie plus bonus content is listed as the top movie download in the Microsoft store as well.

are there any nummbers known? They dont add these to the boxx office resuluts on mojo or do they?

reply

No they don't. They only include box office and video sales (DVD and Blu-Ray) in those numbers. I don't know how much of that money goes to studios though. It must be a much higher percentage than ticket sales because it costs them nothing to put it on a server for people to stream or download, that's why some movies like Captain America: Civil War only cost about $3 on there. Though some of it must go to whoever is hosting it.

I just hope that since more people getting to see it than in cinemas, it would boost DVD/Blu-Ray sales.

As of today, its sales rank on Amazon is #5 in movies overall and #3 in action/adventure movies. In that category, it's behind two superhero movies and ahead of Star Trek: Beyond (which is #4).

It was listed as best seller in "action adventure" movies on Wednesday though (the day after it came out) and second best selling in the "movies and TV" category after the Beauty and the Beast 20th anniversary edition, so it isn't surprising. So, it dropped slightly. Also, apparently the Walmart exclusive steelbook is completely sold out (after only 2 days) but yesterday, that steelbook was listed as best seller (ahead of Batman v Superman ultimate edition) on Walmart's site.

Amazon's sales rank is updated hourly though and it isn't based on total number of copies sold but rather on how many sold recently. We'll see how many copies actually sold this week (keeping in mind though that most editions on Amazon are combo packs except for the standard DVD edition, so each sale of that Blu-Ray is also a sale of a DVD and each sale of a 3d Blu-Ray or a 4K Blu-Ray is also a sale of a standard Blu-Ray). It doesn't look to me like it will be the top selling DVD or Blu-Ray this week though (which is kind of what I was hoping for). It's possible that it might not break even with domestic sales alone but we'll have to wait and see. It actually is competing for second place with Captain America though (X-Men Apocalypse and Star Trek Beyond hasn't been released yet).

Edit: I've just noticed that X-Men is being released on Tuesday, so I think it's not surprising if that ends up being the top selling Blu-Ray next week. The fact that it moved up it's sales rank on Amazon is doing better than Captain America right now is more or less the same thing that happened to Warcraft last weekend. Also, Warcraft is actually a rank ahead of Star Trek which is at number 6. It's at number 5 because for some reason the Hocus Pocus DVD is at rank number 2 at the moment:
