I wonder if anyone has ever said no to a throwdown

Obviously, if anyone ever has, they just don't finish the episode and the whole thing is canned.

But I wonder if anyone actually has. Like, maybe they just don't want to compete for whatever reason, and refuse to do it when Bobby shows up. I mean, more often than not, people would want to compete for the exposure and the chance to say that they beat Bobby Flay in a Throwdown. But there had to be someone who said no, right? Unless of course the whole thing is staged and the people Bobby challenge actually know he's coming.

Throwdown should really do a blooper episode and include those moments. Although I don't know if they would since it might reflect badly on the cooks.

Throwdown with Bobby Flay is my favorite show! There was one episode of a Doughnut throwdown where the guy took awhile to say yes. Then he was really snobby during the whole competition.

doughnut shops are always oddly snobby for some reason.

This was the first one that popped into my head, too. The guy was really reluctant to compete.

On a related note, I wonder if anyone didn't recognise him when he showed up?

Actually, I'm thinking that by now, most people approached by the Food Network to demonstrate their signature dish "for a Food Network special" are expecting him to show up. In fact, I wonder if anyone has ever been disappointed when it turns out that they actually are demonstrating their signature dish for a Food Network special, and Bobby Flay isn't coming?

I agree, they have to know by now that they're going to be in Throwdown. Does Food Network even DO specials where someone makes their signature dish for a large group of people? I've never seen one.

I have a strong suspicion that the purpose of Throwdown isn't actually the competition. If I'm correct, it would be dumb to turn down a throwdown. Nobody cares who wins; the show amounts to free publicity for the chefs and restaurateurs who are challenged. Granted, they're all well known in their cities, but Throwdown, like Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, would make tourists and travelers more likely to try out those places.

One episode that always stands out in my mind is Izzy's Ice Cream (to the point where I actually remember the place's name) from season 1. The guy had no clue who Bobby Flay was, it was hilarious! I would have liked the guy had he not seemed like such a jerk.

the country captain one flay said he knew them well. didn't stop flay from saying after he lost they are great southern cooks. he said that more than once. like they aren't really great cooks. only in their specialty. jerk.

I saw that episode, and I think you may be reading too much into it. The brothers are known as specialists in Southern cuisine, and they were competing with Flay on a Southern dish. It would be like taking offense because he called Morimoto a master of Japanese cuisine.

Another example: Bobby Flay obviously knows many different techniques, but a poster above called him a master of grilling. Was he saying that Flay was a one-dimensional cook by saying that?

flay didn’t say they were great southern chefs before the throwdown. only after he lost. i guess if flay said it once but he said southern a couple times. flay was ungraciously trying to play off his defeat most of all.
