Canadians from Quebec do not talk like that.

That is not what french canadians sound like he sounded like he was from the east coast. I personally liked this movie and thought it was hilarious that he was from Canada but come on guys get the accent right.

Unless that was the point.

P.S. I'm from Canada.

reply

There are Canadians who don't speak French that live in Quebec, just so you know.

reply

Yes but the point is the English speaking people in Quebec don't speak with an Maritimer accent. This is like portraying someone from Pennsylvania with a Texan accent. I don't really think it took away from the movie at all, just thought I'd point out the OP does know what they're talking about.

reply

I thought that fact he was from Canada was some sort of set-up in the story, so they could reveal he was a total fraud in the end. Something about the movie just didn't make him believable to me and I'm no expert on Canadian accents.

reply

There are a lot of things in this movie that were not accurate, then again they were making a comedy, not a fcking documentary! Enjoy it for what it was instead of trying to poke holes in it, the whole thing was absurd and thus funny.

reply

That also had a scene that said "CANADA" in big letters, that was shot on the stairs of a famous building in Chicago. It's a comedy!

reply

I wouldn't necessarily say it sounded like he was a maritimer, but he definitely sounded somewhat like the stereotypical Canadian.

reply

It sounded like he was aiming for a Newfie accent, why the hell they couldn't just make him from Southern Ontario I don't know, then he wouldn't have had to change his accent at all.......imo a Southern Onatario accent is the same as a general American accent...........i'm English but live in Toronto with two sons with Canadian accents.

Maybe i'll ring Grandad and tell him I think he's a boring twat.

reply

I thought he sounded like Ricky/Julian with a little bit of Chicago accent mixed in. Did anyone else think that his accent changed when he was talking to his wife?

reply

Yeah, he was getting mixed up by her scottish accent. poor guy

reply

I could be wrong, but I think his accent was supposed to be bad on purpose. I thought that through the whole movie, like they were making no attempt for him to sound authentic and it was an inside joke of sorts.

reply

From an interview which was on youtube, it was supposed to be 'an' accent, not necessary one of the possible regionnal Quebecer accents.

Isn't Quebec -the- east coast of Canada?

Just double checked my map. Did you mean west?

To this Albertan, his accent was more along the lines of a Francophone from New Brunswick.

reply

As a Newfoundlander who has lived in Nova Scotia and Ontario, there is nothing "East coast" about his accent. Not even a hint. He is clearly trying for central Canada, and failing.
Quebec is not East coast. Labrador is East coast.
